Newbie: '00 E39 M5 to '03 E55 AMG
Hey fam,
About to take a nose dive into the deep end and pick up a black on black '03 E55 AMG with a panoramic sunroof. I know nothing of these cars other than the fact that my car buyer says I'm better off with this than getting another M5. We shall see...
My question to the group is two fold:
1. What the hell am I getting in to?!
2. Are there a ton of issues with this model year? (if someone had told me to avoid the 2000 model year M5 and save myself the maintenance headache, I would have done it!)
I have tons more questions, but I'll pace myself.
Cheers.

I don't get it... assuming you were on bmw forums you must have experience with the search function. You'll get instant results instead of waiting for repetitive answers. Good luck.

If you can, jump into a newer MY. They aren't that expensive (relative). '04 is my pick due to the TCU and burnouts (seems like the last year before the extra nannies came along).
They are animals, you have to feed them and upkeep can be overwhelming if you get one that wasn't maintained properly. It's a 12 year old, supercharged Mercedes AMG, with 4 doors and a lot of electrical bits. You are walking into a storm, but you can control it with the car and how much you want to spent.
Best of luck.

Um, if you are jumping from a 15 year old German car to a 12 year old German car in hopes of leaving all the reliability issues behind, I'm afraid you may be disappointed. In fact, the AMG may be even worse than the M5! Beware!

Interesting. I have had my 2000 E39 M5 for over 10 years and aside from replacing the diff under CPO warranty I have had close to zero issues with it. I can't imagine a day where I will sell it.
I picked up my E55 Wagon a week and a half ago and pray its as reliable as my M5
Very different cars.
Good luck on your search!
