Pulley needs replacing after 6 months of use!
After 4 months with no BOTR (beast on the road) finally she is almost ready to roll, or so I thought, until I got a call from the motor shop yesterday. The 180 crank pulley that was installed last year and has seen probably six months of service already needs replacing. Apparently the keyway is too wide? How does that even happen!? I'm thinking it must have gone on like that and it's just luck that it didn't cause any problems earlier. I did think it was wobbling a little after instillation and posted a couple of videos in the forum although the responses were that I shouldn't be concerned and it looked within tolerance. It's an MKB which uses an oem harmonic balancer. Wow last thing I needed at the end of a long expensive build.

Since the motor is still out of the car you can put a new factory keyway and notch the crank for an additional keyway then you will still be able to use the pulley safely

I'll head to the shop tomorrow to have a look and take some pics.
Wow hadn't even considered the possibility that I might still be able to use it. That would be a relief! I know my engineer is a real stickler so may be hesitant. Is there any reason he should be? Will it be just as reliable as a replacement? Should I pin it also? (it's built on an oem hb). I briefly mentioned pinning the pulley whilst on the phone to him and he seemed to think it would compromise the crank. I know I've got 100% confidence in your word Shardul but I have to convince my man. Have you seen this done or done similar yourself?

If aligned correctly I don't believe there is any chance of damaging the keyway through torque pressure. Those aftermarket reusable hex bolts are torqued a lot higher and no-one seems to have any issues.

this looks like an easy fix,, if the crank keyway is screwed up you could make a jig and drill/enlarge the existing keyway and use a larger pin to press in

good luck
