I've driven the new e60 5 series with the sport package and it handles better than the old e39 5 series for sure. But the ride is not as good in IMHO, and the active steering takes some getting use to. But I'm keeping the wife's e39 5, we just don't like the looks of the new 5 inside and out. In fact, the more I see it, the more I hate it. And I actually kind of like the 7 and Z4 looks, but I can't stand the 5.
Although I've driven the new E55 too, I didn't get a chance to really push it, so I'll let others give their view. Car mags won't give you the answer though, they'll compare the new M5 vs. the E55. Even if it does handle better, the 545i is not in the same league.

I haven't driven the 545i, but owned a 540i in the late 1990's.
That car handled and cornered better than my E55 IMO.
The only weakness the new E55 has IMO is that it's not a great handling car. It's not bad by any stretch. But you're also comparing it with one of the best products from a company (BMW) which places great emphasis on handling and steering, much moreso than AMG.
You won't find any other sedan (beyond the BMW's) which handles BETTER than the E55.
But you also will find that overall the 545i is a mere shadow of the E55 in most every other respect.
The M5 will still suffer from all the interior and exterior design flaws of the 545i, but will outhandle the E55 in my opinion.
