Acronyms

I think it would be a good idea especially for newbies to make a possible sticky with all the acronyms that get thrown around on the board. 4 out of 5 I come across I'm familiar with, but then there is always that one where I kinda have to figure it out, try and google it etc. so I'm sure there are others in my position or even worse off. If anyone wants to give this a shot go for it, as others add to this I will continually edit this post with all the acronyms and their meaning so no need to scroll through the whole post, they'll all be here. If this has been done somewhere disregard, but as I searched for such a thread all I found were comedic acronyms for AMG, different manufacturers etc.

AMG: The letters "AMG" stand for Aufrecht, Melcher and Großaspach (Aufrecht's birth Town). In 1976 most of AMG moved to Affalterbach, with the racing-engine development remaining at the old location in Burgstall.
HE: A heat exchanger is a device used to transfer heat between one or more fluids. In the E55 the stock setup is insufficient to cool the supercharger and an upgraded HE will stop your ECU pulling timing and triggering Limp Mode.
ECU: In most forums the term ECU generally means Engine Control Unit which can be flashed for tuning purposes. In automotive electronics, electronic control unit (ECU) is a generic term for any embedded system that controls one or more of the electrical system or subsystems in a motor vehicle. Some modern motor vehicles have up to 80 ECUs.
TCU: In most forums refers to the Transmission Control Unit. In the automobile industry a Telematic Control Unit (TCU) refers to the embedded system on board a vehicle that controls tracking of the vehicle.
GLWS: Good Luck With Sale
AFR: Air Fuel Ratio - Keep an eye on this if you're car is modded. Most important stat to ensure you don't run lean and blow your motor.
CATs: A CATalytic converter is a vehicle emissions control device that converts toxic pollutants in exhaust gas into less toxic pollutants. They are attached to the exhaust pipe closest to the headers and before Resonators. The E55 has primary and secondary cats.
BWK: Belt Wrap Kit's started were only introduced for the 55k platform around 2012/13. They allow 75% belt purchase on the supercharger pulley rather than the stock 45% which in turn dramatically reduces belt slippage and consequently maintains boost.
HID: Many modern vehicles use HID bulbs for the main lighting systems. The E55 uses Xenon bulbs (which are a type of HID) in the Premium Lighting Package.
CF: Carbon Fiber
CP: Crank Pulley
SP: Supercharger Pulley
SC: SuperCharger
IC: a) Intercooler b) instrument cluster
WOT: Wide Open Throttle
TDC: Top Dead Center (internal engine phrase)
LT :Long Tubes (Exhaust)
cat :catalytic converter (no meow's here)
TB : Throttle Body (rarely timing belt since we use chains)
RWTQ : Rear Wheel TorQue
RWHP : Rear Wheel Horsepower
ET : Elapsed Time
SAM Signal Acquisition Module
LSD Limited Slip Differential (you will actually have fun with this)
IAT'sIntake Air Temperature (colder the better)

Yep or a stickey. Power mods ,pulley ,headers ,tune ,TB in a nutshell with a ton of cooling you run 10's but that's it. AMG didn't leave any little things on the table.

Ok let's start:

Acronyms used in this forum
  • AMG: The letters "AMG" stand for the first letters in the founders first names Aufrecht and Melcher plus Aufrecht's birth Town Großaspach. In 1976 most of AMG moved to Affalterbach, with the racing-engine development remaining at the old location in Burgstall.
  • HE: A heat exchanger is a device used to transfer heat between one or more fluids. In the E55 the stock setup is insufficient to cool the supercharger and an upgraded HE will stop your ECU pulling timing and triggering Limp Mode.
  • ECU: In most forums the term ECU generally means Engine Control Unit which can be flashed for tuning purposes. In automotive electronics, electronic control unit (ECU) is a generic term for any embedded system that controls one or more of the electrical system or subsystems in a motor vehicle. Some modern motor vehicles have up to 80 ECUs.
  • TCU: In most forums refers to the Transmission Control Unit. In the automobile industry a Telematic Control Unit (TCU) refers to the embedded system on board a vehicle that controls tracking of the vehicle.
  • GLWS: Good Luck With Sale
  • AFR or A/F: Air Fuel Ratio - Keep an eye on this if you're car is modded. Most important stat to ensure you don't run lean and blow your motor.
  • CATs: A CATalytic converter is a vehicle emissions control device that converts toxic pollutants in exhaust gas into less toxic pollutants. They are attached to the exhaust pipe closest to the headers and before Resonators. The E55 has primary and secondary cats.
  • BWK: A Belt Wrap Kit on an E55 adds an extra pulley and brace bar allowing 75% belt purchase on the supercharger pulley rather than the stock 45% which in turn dramatically reduces belt slippage and consequently maintains boost.
  • HID: Many modern vehicles use High-Intensity Discharge lamp bulbs for the main lighting systems. The E55 uses Xenon bulbs (which are a type of HID) in the Premium Lighting Package.
  • CF: Carbon Fiber
  • CP: Crank Pulley
  • SP: Supercharger Pulley
  • SC: SuperCharger
  • KC: A Killer Chiller uses the vehicles air conditioning to cool the water and bypasses the HE.
  • MERCEDES: Many Expensive Repairs Can Eventually Discourage Extra Sales
  • SBC: Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC) is the name given to a collection of electronically controlled brake systems managed through this single controller. When the brakes are applied or when ESP intervenes the SBC control unit calculates the desired target brake pressures on each individual wheel. Other features include Traffic Jam Assist, which brakes the vehicle automatically in stop-and-go traffic and the Soft-Stop function which assists with smooth stopping in town traffic.
  • ESP: Electronic Stability Programme identifies driving situations approaching critical road-holding limits such as evasive manoeuvres and helps the driver to stabilise the vehicle by braking individual wheels and adjusting the engine output accordingly.
  • OEM and OE: Original Equipment Manufacturer and Original Equipment
  • SRS: The SRS stands for Supplemental Restraint System and if there is a problem with the safety features of the vehicle, it is the SRS warning that should alert you to a potential problem.
  • FSP: The Fixed Supercharger Pulley is an aftermarket modification that replaces the OE Clutched Pulley. Since it has no clutch the supercharger is always active.
