What did you think of the interior on the SL55...some of the literature describes the combination as Designo Graphite and Charcoal....I saw another description as:
"Graphite Nappa Leather on Seats and Door panel inserts, Black leather on Dash, upper doors reaqr shelf and roll bar. Black Nappa leather on insturment cluster, back of seats, rear side panels, and rear compartment."
this is differnet from both the E and the S which indicate Charcoal rather than the Black descibed for the SL.
I would love to hear from anyone who has actually seen the SL in this gard to confirm the Black dash.

What do you get for $5300?
Just curious, what do you get for your $5300 when you purchase the designo package for an AMG car? Isn't the leather quality already improved in the AMG cars over the standard Mercedes, so what does designo get you in the interior that is worth this kind of money? I know the colors are unique, but why does this cost so much?

Floor Mats
Yes, the floor mats are really nice, but I just cancelled my designo order and changed back to tectite. Know anyone who will sell me their mats for $200?

The leather upgrade can't be much of an upgrade given that the E55 already has nappa and nubuck (and is about as soft as you'll find), and the floor mats can't cost $50 to manufacture.
It would appear that the cost is almost entirely "the price of exclusivity". If a few hundred E55's per year running around the USA makes you feel 'common' maybe the designo package is worth it.
Similar question:
How much profit is built into an SL55 which costs $40,000 more than the E55, but has the same engine and basic technology...plus a convertible roof?

I don't mind paying if I really get something
I think the idea of the designo program is really great- the ability to sort of even more customize your car. The designo program in Germany is great since there are designo studios you can go to and personalize your vehicle and there are many choices. Here we are stuck with the same two or three combinations across the entire Mercedes line. Plus they don't change very often. I had a espresso edition designo E55 in 2001 and it was very nice but now I want something different. To make matters even worse, I lost more money on my designo edition car than any other Mercedes- the dealers won't give you a penny more for designo in trade.
I would get a designo E500 since the leather quality is not very luxurious, but if Mercedes wants another $5300 for their designo E55, they should distinguish it better. I ordered tectite/charcoal and would have gotten the graphite designo if I felt there was any real difference.
