Any ideas?
Hello all.
I'm hoping to get a little insight from you guys. I don't post at all, but I visit the forum religiously. I have a few issues. Let's start here. I recently picked up a 2005 E55. I don't have any history on the car, so I have no way of knowing what, if anything, has been done to it. It needs a few things, it's a bit rough around the edges, but a sound vehicle. A mechanic that I'm friendly with said it was good to go, but could have been better maintained. I drove it for a month, put about 1000 miles on it - with zero issues. Then one night heading to the gym it just died on me. It sputtered out like it wasn't getting fuel. I had to get it towed home. I've done all the forum searching and I've gotten more educated about the car, but I just don't know if there's something obvious that I've overlooked.
I bought a Star SDS system. I figured it would be a smart purchase. I have two other Mercs, plus I want to tune this car.
Here's what I've done so far:
I replaced the crankshaft position sensor, camshaft position sensor. Changed the spark plugs and the supercharger bearing, too.
I also changed 3 coils. I got the car running, but the idle is very erratic, almost like it's about to stall at times. If I rev it aggressively, it'll blow fuse 58, and also give me an ESP error. Sidenote - I'm pretty sure the cats are fried. This weekend I was smelling sulfur. So I'm going to replace them with some higher flow cats, and delete the secondary cats and resonator. I'll also change the oxygen sensors. I'd like to tune the car, but of course this stuff is a prerequisite. Just wondering what else it could be. I've checked the pumps, etc... Star is telling me there are misfires and left and right oxygen sensor issues. The oxygen sensor faults showed up this weekend. Sorry for being so wordy.

NO NO NO...Your problem is in the Braking/ESP system.... I believe. I had this exact problem and brought it on myself when "trying" to bleed the brakes. Miss fire. no power , stinks out the tail pipes and overall runs horrible. Log into DAS and do a quick test and go into brakes and take a look. Your fuse issue can be directly related as well. Just my !/2 cent view.

I'll log in and check the brakes as soon as I get off work. As for the filter, I'm going to swap it out anyway to be safe. I know there was a bunch of talk about replacing just the filter instead of the whole unit. I've searched and searched, but it seems like nobody has come across a drop in unit.

If you keep blowing fuse 58 which is for ignition coils I would be going after that. A few 112/113 engines had a problem with the coil wires on the engine harness side rubbing through and shorting on the valve covers. There was a bulletin.

I've changed 3 coils already. I'll check the coil wires carefully.

For those who helped me, I thank you. The problem was sourced to plugged cats and bad oxygen sensors. The car is in the shop now getting the new primary cats and x pipe (Magnaflow) installed along with new o2 sensors front and back. Also secondary cats and resonator are being deleted. I will update tomorrow or Tuesday.

The saga continues... Let's back up a bit. When I went to start the car to take it to the muffler shop, the battery wasn't strong enough to crank the motor (it's been just sitting in my garage). So I charged the battery and started the car. To my surprise, it idled normally. I drove it to the shop (30 minutes away) with zero issues. When I got there, I had to wait for a bay. While I was waiting with the car running, it reverted to the crazy idle. I was hoping once I got everything changed out it would be back to normal. This isn't the case. The muffler guy called me and said everything is done, but the car still has running issues. He also said I shouldn't even try to drive it home. He said the new cats would heat up in less than 10 minutes and I'd be back soon to replace them. So here we are. I haven't replaced the fuel pump yet because I've been speaking to the service manager at Mercedes-Benz of South Atlanta. He wants me to bring the car in so he can diagnose it for the warranty. My pump is wet on top, so I'm hoping they will honor the warranty and replace it. Do I need to reset the ecm for the car to recognize the new cats and sensors? More importantly, should I tow it right to Mercedes directly from the muffler shop? I was hoping to have it running right when I took it in.
What I've done so far:
crankshaft position sensor
camshaft position sensor
spark plugs
3 ignition coils
Also new primary cats and all four o2 sensors replaced. Secondary cats and resonator deleted, x-pipe added.

When I bought the car I had a mechanic check it out, but no compression check. Keep in mind I drove the car every day for the first 40 days with zero issues. Then one night the car just stalled.
