I don't understand how an unmounted tire can serve any purpose in an emergency. If you have a spare front wheel, mount the front tire on it and it can be used on all four corners in a pinch. A rear wheel/tire can fit in front, but it may rub on a fender well when turning.

There aren't many shop out there equipped to mount 18in wheel/tire, and who will mount it when you have a flat at night? DR. Chill's suggestion makes more sense.

For those carrying a spare mounted tire in the trunk. Will that fit in the tire well or do you just take up the trunk space with the spare. I thought I was getting away from this sort of thing after the C5 is sold, but guess not. Benz needs not immulate the created problems that the "general" was famous for.
