unfreezing stuck bolts
my buddy is restoring an old '67 Firebird and removing some old frozen bolts - I know our cars aren't 'that' old - but sometime you get stuck on bolts...
he found this..
Machinist's Workshop Mag recently published some information on various penetrating oils. The magazine reports they tested penetrates for break out torque on rusted nuts. They are below. They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrates with the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" environment.
Penetrating oils ........... Average torque load to loosen
No Oil used ................... 516 pounds
WD-40 ..................... ... 238 pounds
PB Blaster .................... 214 pounds
Liquid Wrench ...............127 pounds
Kano Kroil .................... 106 pounds
ATF*-Acetone mix............53 pounds
I've used WD, PB and LW - but never tried the ATF-Acetone mix - anyone try this?

for 1/10th the power to loosen the bolt, seems like a great opportunity!

Great question. Perhaps something about the mix slows that process down. I talked to some older car guys I know who confirmed this works. If I recall, you mix the solution in a spray bottle and then just spray the bolt heavily. What I don't recall is the ratio.

Took these bolts off a 69 Camero with rust bust and heat torch.

Here is what you need.
- A cheap spray bottle (you probably have an empty one laying around).
- In this bottle mix a 50/50 mix of 100% acetone and dextron/mercron automatic transmission fluid.
- The two fluids will separate like oil and vinegar so you have to shake the bottle well before spraying.
