Do yourself a favor and stay away from the M156 engine like the plague. Do a quick research on Google about it, it will pop right up.

Well since the OP already has an E63, let's quit telling him to avoid the M156. I doubt OP is just going to take a bath on the car, send it to the scrapyard and spend the money on a different car just because some people have issues. You can find horror stories about many high end, high performance cars. They are in nature, high strung and easy to break for the most part. I would do more research and go for the first engine you found if it will work with minimal changes. You already have all the accessories you need from your current motor so none of the things the shop mentioned should be an issue. Very easy to swap stuff over when you have two motors sitting on the garage floor in front of you.

I think the best pro-active way to handle this issue for anyone who views this in the future while considering a car with the M156 is to get an aftermarket warranty.

if i were in a similar situation i'd take this law suit up again, referencing the push back Mercedes gave in regards to the fuel vapors leak issue. Each state has the right to pass judgement on a case...if that judgement is passed it then can be taken up to federal...but each state stands on their own before the feds step in.

i'd buy that rebuilt engine...new head studs...having that swapped in maybe cost you 1,500 in labor for the in and out procedure from a solid shop. not sure what dealer quotes for this job though.

Damn... I'm having a really sinking feeling with my 09 E63 as it has been having all the symptoms... ticking on idle, coolant consumption and smell of burnt coolant. Ugh... thankfully no meltdown yet so will need to get it fixed. So if the catastrophic hasn't happened yet will new head bolts/gaskets etc. fix it or will there likely be other damage that needs to be addressed? How much does the head bolt repair run?

iirc, it's about $2500. Just ask the dealer for a quote.
