CEL code PO455
This is a little different twist on the dreaded CEL issue. I've been getting a CEL on my 05 E55 for a month or so. The code was P0455 which translates to large leak in the evaporative emissions. Read thru the threads....gas cap, fuel filler neck, GAS TANK,etc. Recently I also began hearing a popping sound after idling for a short while. I started worrying about supercharger bearings and all sorts of things but I took my Harbor Freight stethoscope out and determined that the noise was coming from the evaporative emissions purge valve. Searched the threads and decided to remove the PV and take a look at it. In doing this I found that there is a small plastic can just upstream from the PV called a cage canister damper that is plumbed into the Evaporative emissions system. This can has a hose nipple on either side and the one on the far side from the PV was broken off, thereby producing the "large leak". It's pretty flimsy construction and I suspect that mine is not the only one that had failed. Someone in the past had tried to repair the break with some type of plastic cement. Until my ownership all the services were done by the stealerships.
Anyway, i googled the part number from the canister and came back with no results, so off to the dealership. Turns out the part number has been superseded so he did a cross reference and ordered me the new canister.....$60 including tax. I sucked it up but when I got home I used the new part number off the receipt and did another search and found prices ranging from $28 - $35...all for OEM parts. Live and learn. The new part number for the PV cage canister damper is 211-470-01-16 and it appears to a standard part on a number of MB vehicles. Idk if this will solve my CEL issue but for sure the system would not work with the nipple broken off.

I returned mine to the dealer when it kept throwing the light P0455 -gas tank installed in June- and they had it for 2 days and dropped the tank and did not find a thing...my car was returned and the CEL has not returned yet :-/
For $28-35 it just made it on my maintenance list.
Thank you for sharing your find

Just wanted to do a follow up on my original post. I replaced the canister this morning, cleared my codes and took a 60 mile drive; and it appears that that was the problem. The new design of the canister relieves side forces on the hose nipples which must have been identified as a design problem. The new design also eliminates a 12" or so section of vacuum tube which is never a bad thing. Even though the stealership gouged me on the part, which is nothing but an empty plastic canister, I still feel like I got out of it cheap.

Item 50 is the redesigned canister cage and item 10 is the purge valve. The assembly is right behind the drivers headlight with the canister to the drivers left in reference to the purge valve. Removing the plastic intake snorkel is simple and greatly improves access to the pv and canister. Whereas the new canister design has the hose nipples coming off the canister at a 90 degree angle from its central axis, the old design had the nipples coming straight off either end which puts them under stress and prone to breakage. The new OEM canister comes preassembled with hoses on each end.
