W211 E63 Engine problem!

I just recently bought a 2008 W211 e63. The first day I brought home the car, everything was perfect. Next morning, on a cold start, the engine rattled like crazy for about 7 seconds. Ever since that day, the engine does that every time on a cold start and it does it when the engine cools for about 20-40 min after being used. I looked around for a solution and i couldn't find anything. I want to try and figure out the problem. Please help and/or give any advice on it. Thanks!

You need to have the codes read. Sounds like a misfire. What do you mean by continues for 20 to 40 minutes?

Once I'm done driving the car and it rests for about 20 to 40 minutes, the rattling happens again when i start it. It almost sounds like dry engine, like theres no oil in the engine when it starts.

Not a misfire. It is the camshaft adjusters.

a video of what you're talking about would help a lot. Reading your description, it sounds like you're talking about lifter noise. I put up with the noise for about a year before taking it in to get it diagnosed and i ended up needing new lifters and camshafts on both banks. I opted to have my head bolts replaced with the updated design while they were in there at the same time.

it wasnt cheap but hey! at least my engines bullet proof now

Yep sounds "normal". The pressure releases slowly from the camshaft lifters hence why the sound returns after sitting for a while and also when cold.

so replacing the camshaft lifters and adjusters would resolve my problem? If so, is it a job that could be done at home?

Yes if you are so inclined, you need to buy a timing set of tools, usually about $200 on eBay. Have a look for the DIY head bolt replacement threads. There is a really good one in the cls63 forum. It requires camshaft removal which is 90% of the job you are contemplating. Might as well replace the headbolts too and avoid that catastrophe. I would do it if I had ever gotten around to finding a nice E63 and I am not a mechanic.

If anyone knows about this problem, about how much would it cost me to get it fixed at the dealer?

Four cams (1560504301 - Intake Left, 1560504501 - Exhaust Left, 1560504401 - Intake Right, and 1560504201 - Exhaust Right) at $760 each, thirty-two lifters, part # 1560500225, at $25 per, $50 in valve cover gaskets, and labor plus whatever else they find. Those are all list prices.

You may or may not need new cams. Depends on whether they are worn. Read up on the W204 C63 forum. There are many threads. I would guess $2000 minimum if the cams are ok. If you want the headbolts replaced the dealer would insist on removing the heads and replacing the head gaskets too... $5000+.

I would not drive the car. If the valve buckets wear out you will drop a valve.

My aftermarket warranty(USAA) paid out roughly $9k at the dealer for new headbolts, camshafts and lifters. I'm sure you can get this done for less than that at an indy.
