Tire question

Will I run into any kind of problem if the old tire has only 40-50% tread of the new one? They are rear ones.

I wouldn't risk it. One side will be rotating faster than the other, I've had friends try to cheap out on tires and ruined their differentials running worn/new tires. As a temporary spare it should be fine but long term you run the risk of much larger issues down the road.

The old one might last for another 12K miles and then I will run into mismatch tread tires again. Replace both makes more sense. I just don't want to waste that old tire, it only has 12k miles on it. Thanks for your input.

I always buy tires in pairs if one is bad.

A smaller spare should always go on a non-driven wheel. Kind of a pain in the *** with staggered wheels. If I get a flat on the rear, the car is getting towed.

Interesting! What if it's a 4-matic?
