Holy crap!! I was a mb tech for 9 years and had only seen older diesel mercedes come in any where close to that. Although the m113, 722.6 trans is one of the strongest combos out there.

Every time I rally my car around exotics and it out runs and keeps up with all but the very latest twin turbo cars I love it more. This is a car that's truly rewarding the more you drive it.

Truthfully I fall into that group with 51k on mine, this is my first MBZ coming from BMW and I wanted to at least finish paying it off before it blows up on me (bought last year), but after a year of ownership, lot of research, and some high mileage examples, it seems that you are correct and this generation car is a freakin tank.
I felt confident enough that I picked up a same year ML500 with 100k miles, and it feels tank-like as well

Mine just turned 160K miles...still solid, no rattles, everything works as new...and I ran with a 911 today and stayed right on him up to ludicrous fast. Mine is an 05' and these are some really durable cars. I don't daily drive mine, but I know it's up to the use. This car seems to like to be driven and driven FAST.

i mean it depends on how you drive the car honestly and how your maintenance (tune ups etc) for what the car is i think the gas mileage isn't too bad but i see what you mean

I can put up with bad gas mileage for the huge smile!

True. I don't agree that its unacceptable. I have been through a lot of cars and the E55 is on par for a sports sedan. Maybe time for a tune up?

But for the power, comfort, and smiles I will pay the premium in gas cost. I even get worse mileage than you; only around 15mpg. Lots of stop and go.

I just did one day 800 miles trip to Arizona Phoenix 102F yesterday. I love the Coil over just installed very smooth. Also got 21MPG ! I was driving 80mph all the way with total 3 people in the car and AC ON all the time. You probably can get 30mpg with 4 cylinders Camry but who cares !

That's pretty good! Do you drive it in the heat a lot? Which cooling mods?
Also how much was that conversion to install?

All the way from 91F to 102F in Arizona.... took me total 13 hours with some traffic. My car has upgrade IC pump with header that help to reduce heat. My coil-over was $1000 + 2x rear control arm $420 + $300 labor + $100 alignment ==> total $1800 and no need to worry my airmatic anymore !
