Holy crap!! I was a mb tech for 9 years and had only seen older diesel mercedes come in any where close to that. Although the m113, 722.6 trans is one of the strongest combos out there.

Every time I rally my car around exotics and it out runs and keeps up with all but the very latest twin turbo cars I love it more. This is a car that's truly rewarding the more you drive it.

I bet its because the owners think "supercharged AMG, I better put miles carefully on this one", which is confirmed by the fact that there are so many 55's out there with less than 50k miles on the clock

Truthfully I fall into that group with 51k on mine, this is my first MBZ coming from BMW and I wanted to at least finish paying it off before it blows up on me (bought last year), but after a year of ownership, lot of research, and some high mileage examples, it seems that you are correct and this generation car is a freakin tank.

I felt confident enough that I picked up a same year ML500 with 100k miles, and it feels tank-like as well

Mine just turned 160K miles...still solid, no rattles, everything works as new...and I ran with a 911 today and stayed right on him up to ludicrous fast. Mine is an 05' and these are some really durable cars. I don't daily drive mine, but I know it's up to the use. This car seems to like to be driven and driven FAST.

The only reason I don't DD mine is the horrible MPG. I mean, my w163 ML500 gets like 3-4 mpg better. It is a 4 door sedan after all, and honestly the mpg is kind of unacceptable for a car this size.

i mean it depends on how you drive the car honestly and how your maintenance (tune ups etc) for what the car is i think the gas mileage isn't too bad but i see what you mean

I agree but its just too fun not to drive! The only other car that has had me itching to drive it was my 911 TT. Its probably one of the best reasons to get up and go to work....I get to drive the AMG lol! I drove my truck the last couple of days (possible snow ) and cant wait to switch back.

I can put up with bad gas mileage for the huge smile!

True. I don't agree that its unacceptable. I have been through a lot of cars and the E55 is on par for a sports sedan. Maybe time for a tune up?

What's considered a 'tune-up'? My car gets around 18mpg, which I think is pretty average, but always up for better mpg.

You want better than 18 mpg on a car with performance figures like these E55? Might be time for a smart or Yaris!!

nah. Just wanted to pick up some more mpg if it was feasible. It's funny you mention a smart, I'm thinking of getting one since my commute jumped up to 82 miles a day.

They are great cars I had one for half a year. It was a Diesel. That thing was amazing for gas mileage it was actually ridiculous. Get a Brabus if you can!

But for the power, comfort, and smiles I will pay the premium in gas cost. I even get worse mileage than you; only around 15mpg. Lots of stop and go.

I just did one day 800 miles trip to Arizona Phoenix 102F yesterday. I love the Coil over just installed very smooth. Also got 21MPG ! I was driving 80mph all the way with total 3 people in the car and AC ON all the time. You probably can get 30mpg with 4 cylinders Camry but who cares !

That's pretty good! Do you drive it in the heat a lot? Which cooling mods?

Also how much was that conversion to install?

All the way from 91F to 102F in Arizona.... took me total 13 hours with some traffic. My car has upgrade IC pump with header that help to reduce heat. My coil-over was $1000 + 2x rear control arm $420 + $300 labor + $100 alignment ==> total $1800 and no need to worry my airmatic anymore !
