Just a note to the E55 crowd; when installing the latest fuel pumps an adapter cable is required to install. Be advised the adapter cable changes the power from pins 1 and 3 on the in-car harness to pins 2 and 3 on the latest fuel pumps.

This is for A211 540 07 00 adapter cable.

Why is it important? I built a volt/amp measurement test device using a second adapter cable. What I didn't catch the first time is I can only use one adapter cable in circuit; using two adapter cables reverses polarity on one fuel pump and gave erroneous measurements.

With correct polarity under test, the fuel pumps combined draw over 26 amps. The fuel pump relay is rated for 40 amps. I would conjecture that as the fuel filters begin to clog, amperage rises to close to 40 amps and melts the relay and connectors.

FWIW, I'm measuring the fuel pump current draw at every oil change.

The adapter cable is required to connect the latest version fuel pumps (A211-470-00-00 Fuel Sending Unit) to the stock OEM harness. The stock harness has power on pins 1 and 3. The fuel pumps listed in this paragraph have power on pins 2 and 3. The adapter cable listed above reroutes the wires.
