Help troubleshooting messed up comand nav after installing new map disc.
Good morning folks,
Car in question is a 2006 E55.
When I first got this car a few months ago I downloaded the updated map disc from a link on this forum. I did the DVD burn and it took fine in the car and uploaded the software etc..
Now the problem is the nav can't find me, and the compass is not functioning correctly.
After reading online it's clear these cars use the satellites to determine the compass status. I tried to reinstall the old disc and it's doing the same thing. I thought I read something at some point about needing to upgrade the firmware in the Comand.
At this point I've messed it up enough without advice.
Any thoughts on this?
Thanks Everyone.

Check your GPS antenna and the number of satellite connections it has. Chances are your antenna shielding (the insulation like on a wire) has peeled away and it's shorting out. Common problem after 7-10 years.

It only takes 10-15 minutes if your GPS antenna can't lock on to enough satellites (4). With a new antenna I normally get 9, maybe 11 at max, all the time. This is assuming the car is outside, obviously, with a clear and unobstructed (trees, etc) line of sight to the sky.

I installed the disc about a month ago for a couple weeks then noticed it was goofed up and put the old disc back in which obviously didn't help. I'll put the updated disc back into the nav unit and give it a bit more time.
How do I see how many satellites I am locking onto?

If someone is inclined to burn an iso of maps to DVD, you have to be very particular to how it is done.
Media type really matters. Verbatim +R DL DVD works very well and is arguably the only media type that consistently works across automotive DVD navigation systems.
Use ImgBurn. And you _must_ have a dvd burner that can support changing the book type to DVD-ROM. Not all dvd burners can support this. Most Lite-On branded dvd burners support this. ImgBurn will let you know if your burner can change book type.
Burn at 4x or slower.
And pretty much everyone who sells these "official" discs on eBay are all counterfeit.
I don't condone piracy, but at the same time I don't condone people being ripped off and MB makes it very difficult for anyone to update and upgrade their NTG1 legally.

Apparently I am living right, I went ahead and reset the unit again by pulling the fuse and putting the old map disc in and eventually it started working almost three days later.
I won't be messing with it again, thanks guys.
