IAT on instrument cluster (in lieu of outside temp)

Hey guys,

I've seen photos where the outside temp on the dash was reworked to show IAT's.

Anyone know how this is achieved? I have STAR with dev mode.

Thanks!

Extend the wires and plumb the sensor from the front some where in the intake tract to get the reading on the dash.

Does the car rely on the outside temp sensor for any functions? Like Air Con or something?

Or is that sensor there simply to tell you the outside temp?

I do believe it does... Woiuld need to read a whole evening inside the WIS documents, but i would be convinced the ECUs in the car would use that value for something.

What temp do you want to know? Air entering before throttle body? or air temp say at the intake plenums?

The later sounds a big more difficult to do.

I doubt it would be accurate.

Why not? Air temp probe isn't that special. If it reads air passing by the grill or in the intake tract, what would be the difference?

I'd really like to have the IAT where the ambient is. When i refer to IAT, i mean the actual temp in the intake, not just incoming air temp (Thats probably close to ambient anyway)

I was hoping that I can tap the ambient temp wires into the existing IAT sensor. Do they both operate on same values? If so, i can just splice into existing and easily reverse if i ever wanted to. Thoughts?

And about plumbing the ambient sensor into the intake, that sensor is capped at 140*F. Not that Id ever want my IAT's that high, but on a 100*F, they may go up there briefly. I think that would be a limiting point too. Not the end of the world but...

you may want to look into the "smoothing" of the ambient air temp (that is done to keep the display from changing quickly) before pursuing this path (swapping input sensor). You will likely find that the IAT info would be made useless (by virtue of delay and excessive smoothing) when translated through this portal.

Have you already checked out "torque" ? this is a good solution if you don't want to add hardware.

Cheers,
Chris

here is some info (from the Mercedes ETM) about how the ambient air temp signal (from the sensor) is processed in the W211 .... that should make it clear that the delay makes this solution useless

"When driving
When the vehicle is moving, the delay periods depend on the vehicle speed. At speeds above 45 km/h rising outside temperatures are displayed after a delay period of 1.5 minutes. At speeds of 20 km/h to 45 km/h rising outside temperatures are displayed after a delay period of 3 minutes. If the vehicle speed falls below 20 km/h, the display is only changed if the measured value falls"

hope that helps,
Chris

Thanks Chris!

And yes, I already have DashCommand (iphone version of torque) and use it quite often. I'm just becoming a little weary of plugging and unplugging this thing all the time and wanted to avoid the hassle of connecting the phone every time.

PS - i sent ya paypal payment for a scattershield about an hour ago.

Its already shipped

I have android head units in both of my AMG daily drivers (thinking I'd use torque in a hard-mounted arrangement) but ended up relying on data logging set-ups to both.

I like zietronix with Dash daq (now called "ndash"?) I have that set up in one of my AMGs

In my SL55 I have an older austrailian (tech edge) wideband logger set up along with aeroforce interceptor gauges . I do like those guages particularly since I can monitor the CAN and keep tabs on the transmission including "actual gear" which I always have displayed ... I also like to display the transmission temp as that lets you know when the car is warmed up enough to really get on it.

Cheers,
Chris
