went to the track

i went to the track last week (1st time ever) and ran 12.9. massive tirespin. had a pathetic 2.278 60ft time. i replaced the snorkel tube as many others have yesterday and went to the track again today. it ran a 12.6 (2.10 60ft) but the 2nd run i ran a 12.8 (2.17 60 ft) the key seems to be traction and NOT flooring it from the stop. i have not mastered that techinque yet as some of the guys running > 12.4 on this forum have posted. it was set in comfort mode and 36 lbs in front and 26 in rear. whenever time allows me ill probably be buying some bfg drag radials 2753518 and head back to the track.

Definitely leave the traction control on and go around the burnout box. Try to get as little water on the tires as possible. Turn off the traction control briefly and do a "tire clean" small burnout to make sure the tires or (in the case of the open diff E55) tire are as dry as possible. Make sure to turn the traction control back on and then launch slightly above idle with a little brake torque and push the accelerator to halfway to launch. Then almost immediately push the accelerator to the floor and let the car do the rest. Manual shifting could only slow your times...make sure the car is in "S" mode. If the tires aren't wet, you may get a few blinks of the yellow "!" which isn't too bad. If the track is slick and traction is poor, the "!" may blink for a long time especially if you floor it immediately. My car was fairly consistent when I did these procedures and my best is posted in my signature. You should weigh your car without you in it just to see how much your beast weighs. I also have a pano roof car and it weighs 4220 without me in it. Supposedly the non pano roof cars weigh approx 150lbs less which would equate to over a tenth in the 1/4. Anyone weigh their W211 E55 other than me? Good luck and drag radials are also in my future. The only problem is the open differential and lack of limited slip differential that only allow power transfer to one wheel. MB must not have realized that many of their buyers would be taking their beasts to the strip....

My times are not nearly as exciting, but the NA engine did okay. It was a 75 degree night, 70% humidity ... best time 13.7 at 103.92 mph. Best 60' was 2.19, most were 2.23.

I raced an 03' M3 (with SMG) a few times and he beat me by .2 each time, with the difference easily found in our 60' times.

No mods to the car.

It sounds like I've got same ride w/out the Pano-roof. (Color and All) You obviously have the technique for scooting down the track dialed in. Which track do you go to? I would enjoy a jaunt or 2 or 3 down the track. I bet it feels great.

My favorite track is MIR which is barely into Maryland off route 301. The best track for me locally(45miles away) is VMP in Dinwiddle. MIR has their stuff together to make a smooth day of drag racing with an easy inspection and efficient running lanes. VMP always has issues with slow as hell inspection lanes with guys checking dumb stuff on brand new cars and running lanes that are slow as molasses. I live outside Richmond....where in VA are you? Would love to see you at the track sometime.

about the drag radials i would not suggest that there is someone on this forum who killed his rear from that he ran 11.88 the its already months and they did not change it yet they are still investigating i would think twice before you do that.

i think you should just get more practice and you will do better. There are people on this forum running well into t he low 12s with stock tires. So just keep practicing

Practice makes perfect. The judicious use of the right foot is most critical! The application of throttle has to more or less match the power curve and available traction. Good luck and keep trying!
I haven't seen anything about a blown differential on this forum. When was this?

thanks for the feedback guys. ill try being easier on the throttle or atleast getting rid of the contisport 2's and replacing them with atleast s03 or re050 bstones. the comment of drag radials causing a blown diff has me a bit worried . i didnt read or hear of anyone with that situation but if anyone has more details of it i would like to hear about it. im all for fun but a blown diff and driving a c230 for a month is no fun to me.

Yeh
Way to go guys. I can understand if someone blew their diff at the track and does not want to advertise the fact, particulaly if they are struggling with a warranty claim, but a warning to other users via a friend would be nice, so others don't have to suffer the same fate.
Is this blown diff stuff BS or legit?.

My (limited) understanding:

A Code 8 is a red flag that is attached with the car's VIN/VMI. If your car requires any warranty repair, the MB's regional rep must approve any claim.
