Dealer won't disable cornering light function.

I asked my dealer if they could disable the cornering lights through STAR, using the technique posted here on the forum.

This was the response:

"We feel this is SCN coded from factory like thisand it is not a system that we are able to change."

That's disappointing, I cringe every time someone tells me I have a blown fog light.

They can turn it off. I had my indy mechanic turn mine off as I hated that function.

I view this behavior no differently than folks who drive newer cars with LED DRL where the turn signal disables it and looks like the headlight itself is blown. That's worse to me.

It is gimmicky, but not enough for me to go out and disable the thing (unless you drive at night a lot).

They do that because the turn signal needs to be the brightest light when it's on or some **** like that. With the LEDs on they drown them out too much so they shut them off on that side when the turn signal is on.

The dealer is not lying or unwilling or anything else. They are simply not able to do this. It is part of the scn coding and the only way they can change that is to have Mercedes corporate give them a new coding string for the car. And that is not going to happen. Many things that even use to be able to be changed at the dealer level simply are not anymore. An aftermarket Star machine with developer mode can do this but the dealers do not have this.
The process eliminates the problem of a technician coding it wrong.. It is just automatically generated from the vin number.

Besides it is also actually illegal to change lighting functions.

My indy guy did it with a pretty generic (although higher end) OBDII reader thing-a-ma-bobber that they use on all the cars that come through their shop. It only took him a few minutes. They don't have Star there and won't go halvesies on one with me (it's my housemate's shop).

Like I said the dealer just simply does not have the ability to do it by going in and changing the code. You have to look at the dealer as and extension of the manufacturer. The manufacturer does not want anyone changing their cars. There are tons of options and codiing strings for different things on every car. From headlights to tail lights. and everything inbetween. Coding in the control modules is extensive to each model and each country. So generating this code by hand every time was a huge amount of work. When the w211 came out we were replacing the central gateways on nearly every car for almost a year. The coding took hours. We had to print out pages of screen shots from the old module and then install the new module and code it. It was rediculous. We got paid .2hrs for the whole thing. Because it was supposed to be automatic suck and blow.

Gee that's strange, I've got active curve illumination too and no one in about 3 years has ever told me I have a blown fog lamp. When does that happen? I like to tell people it has active curve illumination and that the headlight beams turn 12 degrees to one side or the other when you turn the steering wheel.
