HP / Torque gain numbers? Are these better than long tube ones?

Does it require a tune?

You will see about 20-30WHP/WTQ (depending on your mods). Through testing, we have seen that long tubes are about the same in HP/TQ gains.

With these headers, there will be a CEL due to the deletion of the cats. A tune would get rid of the CEL and optimize the headers for your vehicle. In short, yes, I would recommend getting a tune.

Thanks,

Would these fit a 2003 E500, and is it possible to not connect the downpipes and just install them like shorty headers, leaving the primary cats in place?

They do fit the 2003 E500. However, they do not fit without the dp's. You will need to use them in order for the rest of the header to reach and connect to the stock exhaust.

I am waiting on a set along with solid mounts so I'm super excited to get them on.

I'm EC tuned, 180mm cp, high flow fitlers, and no cats or res.

Without a re-tune will I see power gains? Curious.

Do these cats lower IAT without a tune, and with a tune respectively? In other words, I heard that mids + tune cancel out any cooling benefit, word of mouth in the facebook group not sure how true it is.

Great! Yes you will see power gains from just installing the headers alone, it will free up some back pressure and create more exhaust flow.

The only thing to lower IAT's would be cooling mods or decreasing boost. I dont think installing headers will lower IAT's but it will create more air flow to have exhaust pressure (heat) escape more freely.

Thanks,
So with these headers, the car would not pass an emission inspection?

I can't speak for DC, but in CA there's no way you'd pass with them. If you have a visual or sniffer inspection I'm guessing you wouldn't pass.

These do fit RHD E55's. You would just need to dimple/dent one of the runners.

Everything depends on how your state does emission testing. If they go by OBDII for monitors, this can be fixed by the STAR Tool. You can code out the O2 monitor. When they go in through OBDII, there will be no O2 monitor, and you'll pass.

If they only check for a CEL, the tune can code that out and you'll pass.

Finally, if your state has a sniffer test, well, you're out of luck.

California no longer requires a sniff test for gasoline powered vehicles from model-year 2000 and newer. See below:

Californians getting Smog Checks today may notice that the traditional tailpipe test used for many years has been replaced by a quicker, computer-based test for gasoline-powered cars model-year 2000 and newer, and for most diesel vehicles that are model-year 1998 and newer.

This updated test uses the diagnostic capabilities of the vehicle's computer system instead of the traditional tailpipe probe to measure the vehicle's emissions. This On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) system gathers information and determines if the vehicle's emission control systems are operating properly. A visual inspection of emission control components is still required as well.

The OBD only method of testing vehicles is the result of 2010 legislation (AB 2289-Eng) which is designed to improve the Smog Check Program and further reduce air pollution. The Smog Check program removes hundreds of tons of smog-forming pollutants from California's air every day.

Gasoline-powered vehicles model-year 1999 and older will continue to receive Smog Checks using a tailpipe probe as well as the OBD test.
The only concern would be the visual inspection. If you know the right test place, the tech can look the other way...

I'm in Maryland, we just do the OBDII test now. But I thought if you coded out the o2 sensor, the car wouldn't pass a readiness check, and therefore fail? I'm just trying to understand how this works. This is my first time actually considering headers.

We have OBDII inspection here in Texas as well. When you code out the O2's using the STAR Tool, it actually codes out the monitor. So, when they plug in the OBDII reader the O2 monitor won't even show up, and you'll pass.

I ALSO have these headers from Eurocharged and have to pass the obd2 readiness test. This works well w/ no issues. Mount your rear o2 sensors out of the exhaust stream use a spacer welded into the bung or a 90 degree spacer type connection. The tune normally codes out the rear 2 sensors. Jerry gave me a second tune with rear sensors on. All o2 sensors were ready with this tune and passed. With all 4 on no CEL. I have 100 cell race cats that I was told would probably set a CEL, so I mounted the rear o2s of the exhaust stream which works fine. These headers IMO are a good bang for the buck.
