Fuel tank again???
I had the smell and replaced everything a few months back under warranty. The car is back at the dealer waiting for another tank. My car is an 05. My friend had it replaced on his 03 by the dealer(different one) and has the smell occasionally also.
Mine only did it rarely, a few times over the course of a couple of years. The conditions had to be as follows; hot day(90+), 2 to 3 hours of city driving, and finally sitting in heavy traffic with AC running and it starts. I don't DD this car so this would not happen often. You kinda notice something, then, within seconds it's practically unbearable. Roll down the windows and you almost gag, roll them up and you suffocate! The fumes have a terrible effect on my wife immediately. She developed a massive headache and horrible nausea the rest of the day/night and now we know this is the second time it's happened to her.
Has anyone else had the smell after tank being replaced under warranty?
I'm waiting to hear their explanation on why it had to be replaced again. At least when I drove into their enclosed service bay and left it idling for a few minutes while we talked, they all got a good taste of the smell I was complaining about!

Oh, the tank cracks often you mean, that it doesn't happen again with a new tank is bs.
Does it happen during install? Another member had it redone due to something happening while installing.

Many other manufacturers that used Continental Automotive group's tanks have issued a recall due to faulty material.used to make the tanks. Not sure why MB hasn't issued a formal recall. It may be because of cost or that they don't have the new tanks in their hands yet.
