Mercedes E320 4-matic
push button start

I have an E 320 4-matic 2004 and it has been a sweet car. But the push button start no longer works. My mechanic-a fine lower cost alternative to the dealer says it will cost me about $1200. I also have an engineer friend who has a Mercedes and can do an incredible amount of repair at home. Any idea what I need to do? All other functions are fully intact.

Well...you are posting in the AMG section but quite a few of us have the push button start. This has been covered extensively in the past so use a search engine. The problem in most cases is the wire from the button breaks at the point where it enters the shifter console.
