Transmission issue

So today I'm driving to work. I pull up to a stop light and when I try to go again, I slowly take off and then my trans starts slipping like it's in neutral. It eventually catches and but keeps wanting to slip. So I pull in a gas station shut everything down. Start the car back up and it seems fine, get about 300 feet down the road and the car is acting like it's in neutral again, not engaging at all. Ride the hill in neutral down to work.

Let the car sit until lunch. Start the car up and everything is fine. Drive around the parking lot for about 10 minutes and it's acts like it's neutral again.

Have it towed to the shop and they said the trans filter was clogged. The said they have seen this several times over the last year. They say that torque converter is likely wearing sending particular into the trans filter and it will keep clogging.

Has anyone else had this issue or can comment on the logic? They showed me several cases they fixed where that was the issue, just not anything I have seen before reading here. So they are suggesting replacing the torque converter and trans fluid and filter.

Thank you

Maybe start with the fluid and filter change, see how long that gets you down the road.
How many miiles on your car? Has the fluid ever been changed?

Yeah that's the plan, 145k miles. The fluid has been changed twice. We will see how long the filter last before getting clogged again. I just never heard of torque converter issues causing transmission filter clogging.

You'll know if there's a real problem when you dump the old fluid. If it sparkles, it isn't because it's magical - that'd be metal. Seems like it'd take a LOT to clog up a filter.
When the fluid was changed in the past, was the filter changed also?

I have had this issue multiple times at my shop. The crazy thing is that you cannot even see what is clogging the filter. The last one I cut apart the converter and found the one way roller on the stator had failed. Changing the filter only lasts maybe an hour or two.

Thats similar to what the shop said, fluid and new filter should be done today. Guess I will see if it gets clogged again. How much are the torque converters that your sourcing at your shop?

I just get a used one. You can usually get them for around 200.00. A new one from MB is over a grand. You can have a used one custom stalled for less than that.

Access a STAR system and 15 minutes will give you a very good idea of transmission health to include pressure. If the clutch packs are worn out, changing the fluid and filter is a waste of time.

The obvious is to start with a drain/fill + fresh filter
Those service intervals are way to long, 145K and trans only serviced twice? service should be done every 40K max.
These trans are pretty robust and you should be fine if you already drove 20+ miles and it was perfect.

Looking back at the records, trans fluid and filter has been changed 4 times previously. I think it should be fine, but I still think I will have to replace the torque converter at some point when/if the filter clogs again.
