Oil Change Help

Just picked up a e55 and did the oil change myself

Picked up 2 new drain bolts and washers from the stealer, did a oil change, drained with both drain bolts and added 9 quarts of oil

When I go to check the oil level it’s giving me very low numbers so I went for a drive and I saw 4.5 quarts to 6.8 while driving

Then I went on the other oil measurement screen and it said the oil level was okay. I’m guessing maybe a bad oil level sensor?

Make sure you check the car 20 min after driving it on a flat surface for levels results .Check That first then if that’s not reading correctly ,most likely your sensor is bad .

My car does the exact same thing. I attribute it to oil circulating in the engine while driving.

After a oil change on correct oil amount checking it should be around 7.8 or so other goes to filter and crank case.

are you supposed to check your oil while driving? i don't think so. even with dry sumps you do it at idle.

This is 100% normal. You'll see the same levels on any E55 when it's on/driving. If you put in 9 quarts and don't have any leaks, don't worry about it. If you really want, you can get an engine oil dipstick to check the true level.

https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/mer...-baum-120-0721

For the E55, the level on the dipstick should be between 156 and 172mm. Make sure the engine is at operating temp, then turn the car off and check the level 5 minutes later.

While we're on the topic of oil changes, does anyone know why there's always an extra O-ring that comes with the new filters? I use Mann filters and the first time I thought I just got an extra o-ring accidentally, but my latest filter had the same extra.

Where does it go?

Where the oil filter stem interfaces the filter cap. No need to change if not loose.

I seem to recall reading that the little o-ring is for the oil dipstick. I've never bothered to change it though. Looks like it's about the right size.

Was just for testing purposes. I know that’s a very incorrect way to check it lol
