W211 E63 Starter Motor

Has anybody done a DIY on the starter motor? It does not seem to be a common problem at all on these cars but mine is bad (I just ticked over 100K miles). What little info i can find seems to indicate its a pretty tough task for a DIYer.

Also would love to know what other people payed to have it done. My indy quoted $1500 which seems high (but the OEM part is about $800 itself)

Strangely enough the starter burned up the ground wire to the chassis and engine's electric system is now shorting out so im dead in the water for the time being. It gave me a big scare as the car acted like it had a blown head gasket and i thought i was the latest head bolt failure victim (ive had my head bolts done already so luckily is wasn't that)

Thanks in advance

Are you sure its that simple?

I found this article which indicates you have to remove and engine mount and push the engine up; https://mbworld.org/how-tos/a/merced...starter-387781

But maybe this only applies to the E55?

I tried to remove my Starter when I did my Rear Main Seal but couldn’t figure out what tool would work to remove that “protected” nut that is surrounded by channel walls so close that I couldn’t get a ratchet, much less a wrench, on it? I had a Starter Bushing renew kit, but passed on it since I failed to remove that nut? I should have done it when I had both Heads off!
