How many of you actually drain the oil from the oil cooler in your M156?

How many of you actually drain the oil from the oil cooler in your M156?
I don't know if many of you actually do this, but I do. When I do my oil service, not only do I drain the oil from the engine oil pan, but I also drain it from the oil cooler.
The oil cooler itself holds about a quart of oil, so if you don't drain it, your introducing that dirty oil back into the clean oil that you just added. The oil cooler uses the same metal gasket as the oil drain plug.
This is why some of you can only add about 8 quarts, instead of the recommended 9.2 quarts in the M156. I make this a point at every single oil change.

Everyone should, but few do. Even the techs I worked next to at my old dealerships thought it was a waste of time. Just another reason why I had to get out of there. If there is a drain on it, I would recommended draining it. Just like the torque converters.

Well, there is definitely a drain for it, on the left side of all the M156 oil coolers. I mean why would you not drain it, your just dumping 1 quart of used motor oil back into your nice clean oil.
I know the clean oil will not be clean for long, when it runs through the entire engine mixing with all the residual dirty oil left inside the engine. But I for one make it a point to drain it.

Just be sure not to over torque the drain plug when you are done draining it. Had another kid doing an oil change on one of the C63 in the shop at the dealership and he cracked the oil cooler and had to replace it.. The worst thing was that he returned the car to the owner after he did it and it was puking oil for about a week before it came back with everything under the car coated in oil.

It so simple a cave man can do it. 
Just find the drain bolt, located on the lower right side of the cooler. Place a catch pan under it, and remove the drain bolt.
It uses the same metal gasket as the oil pan. Remember not to over tighten it, or you risk cracking your oil cooler.

I drain the cooler every time and after i drain the cooler and motor i run another 2 qts through it to get all the old oil out. Yeah i know I’m over the top but i drive the car hard.

I can't figure what I am doing wrong with mine. I drain oil from both places then I pour 8 quarts, and it is at the max level. Adding 0.5 quarts more brings oil level to over max mark which worries me. How do you guys pour 9.2? Why does my car only takes 8? It is 2007 E63. Somebody recommend in another thread that I shouldn't worry and just 9.2, but as know adding more than it takes isn't a good idea.

Did you start the car thereby allowing the oil to warm up before taken a final reading. My dipstick level out towards the higher end of the max mark. Are you draining the oil from the pan, or using an extractor? As the would explain it!

I also have an 07 E63. So I find this to be odd, and can't explain it. When I drain my oil from the pan and the cooler, I can always put in 9.5 qts. And the dip stick reads that the new oil level is towards the Max but not overfilled.
And I buy (2) 5 qt jugs from Walmart. The owners manual says that the car holds 9.2 qts of oil, but I don't know if that is the minimum or maximum levels. My car doesn't burn oil or smoke on start ups, so that eliminates leaking valve seals. So your guess is as good as mine.

I think that you may have a blocked passage of some kind, that isn't allowing all the oil to drain.
Or you might have excessive oil in your intake from the PVC valve, who knows?
So if your putting in exactly what your getting out, then I would say that your okay.

not sure if the M113 has same type of design, but I always use oil extractor from under the hood only. No draining at pan or cooler. Mann or Mahle filter. When I've submitted my oil (10k miles later) to Blackstone, the reports (dont have them in front of me) have always come back showing the oil still in very good shape and in the two times I've done the tests, the reports indicated the oil was good for an estimated additional 5k miles. In the end, (assuming I have same oil cooler capacity?) appears the dilution of old to new oil wasnt enough to make a tangible difference in the oils ability to protect the vital parts and/or the new filter helped filter out impurities in the old oil..

That is the same oil that I use in my E63, what is your oil capacity? Ours is 9.2 qts but Rovel only gets 8 qts which is puzzling to me.

9.2 as well. Now admittedly when I just changed my oil, I wasnt very precise. Used one full 5 quart jug, then about 4 quarts or so of the second. Started the car and let it idle for 30 seconds. Shut it off. Checked dipstick 60 seconds later. Oil was about 2mm from the extreme top edge of the red part of the dipstick. So I most likely have about 1/4 to 1/2 quart too much, but not enough to cause any harm.

I do pretty much the same thing. Dump in 9 qts, bring the engine up to temperature then check the level, if needed then add another +/- .5 qts to bring it to the mark.

I always respect anyones preferences on how THEY maintain THEIR car, however (as you may know), the whole 2 quart thing isnt adding any life to your engine. Not hurting for sure, but not adding any life to it. Statistically speaking, you'll sell it (or total it) before it gets to say, 600k miles.

So how can Rovel only manage to get in 8 qts after draining both the pan and cooler.
And if he adds that extra .5 qt, then he is over the max fill level.

I am very puzzled with this. Hachiroku is right in that I have the new updated dipstick which sucks in every way. I wish I kept my old original one. Like if the reading is incorrect, then I am putting 1.5 quarts less oil than I should and it worries me.
Does anyone know what was part number for the old version of dipstick? I'd buy one if I could.
Yuille36, the engine runs smooth. Wouldn't I feel engine shake of some sort if I had blocked passage? Also when I open the plugs the oil flows fast. Next time, I will change the oil myself and measure how much comes out.

The old one was discontinued because the plastic breaks off. ya you don't want those plastic pieces in the engine oil or pickup. Just one of those AMG exclusive learn the hard way items.

I would say if the oil flows out smoothly, then you certainly don't have any blocked passages. I know think, that your car just didn't have enough oil, but the instrument cluster should have notified you to add oil.
I know that when I'm close to changing my oil for the year, if I'm low on oil it notifies me, to add oil and next fill up.

That sounds reasonable, as hard accelerations expedites oil consumption. My C63 would do this as well.

Fun fact: yesterday there was a Ford Mustang GT in front of me at a street light. I think they have 5.0 liter engines and are fast cars. The guy pulls hard on green and spins tires. I know it is a provocation and don’t pay attention. I see that he drives slowly ahead waiting for me to line up for a rolling drag race. I line up with him, we drive about 35 mph and floor it. I was in comfort mode. Oh man, I could see him in my left mirror behind me all time and was pulling away from him more and more
We slowed down later, waved at each other and smiled. That was 50-60 years old gentleman, but clearly a petrol head. That made my day It wasn’t in the city though. It was a backroad in Mountains so it was safe.It is awesome that 11 years old car still leaves majority of modern cars behind it easily. Love my AMG
