Thanks

Just heard: my car is in. I will be going in a couple of hours to pick it up.

Thanks to everyone on this list for their advice. I think MB owes a debt to this site -- I am sure it raised the probability of my getting an E55. I also know better what to expect.

Wish me luck. You too, Kain.

I think waiting for 1K miles is hard enough that I am going to just take two days drive to Toronto and back ad get it over with.

How vigilant are Ontario traffic cops?

i dont know if you want to break your engine in on a long trip. dont get me wrong, its not BAD, we actually did it, only because we had to, but i would break it around town, only because its key to vary your revs, and not to set cruise while breaking it in, especially if its for a long period of time. GL with your car

Thanks for hte warning. But it is a bit late. I got the car and took off.

Some initial observations:

1. It exceeded my expectations.

2. No problems yet (except for my wife complaining about the passneger seat moving very slightly without cause and hte wipers coming on with occasional singel wipes on a perfectly dry day)

3. During break in I did not have hte chance to really hit the gas. Therefore I had the chance to really see hte luxury aspects. The car is terrific as a luxury vehicle. It has more features that worked well than I had expected. The seats are incredible -- the best I have ever sat in.

4. I loved the feel of hte suspension (sort of felt like it was rigid with a thin sheet of rubber). You feel very secure. The car feels small and heavy while nimble. There is a certain pleasure to throwing around something which feels like it has so much concentrated weight. However, it does not feel light. It does not have the feeling of a light weight sports car but I had a great feeling of satisfaction in normal driving -- I could prefer a lighter car on the twisites but there is a good feeling about the stability of hte E.

5. No complaints about brakes or steering. They gave me reasonable road feel and were very responsive. They might be non-linear but I did not have any trouble adapting. No shuddring of the ABS was most welcome.

On the other hand, it is a real gas guzzler. Even doing a constant 60 I could not break 20 mpg. The steering wheel looks bad for a car of this price.

Glad you're enjoying your car. I agree about the steering wheel. You should check out autowerks sport steering wheel. It is beautiful. There are some threads here with pic. do a search on "steering wheel upgrade" and you shoud find it. After seeing the pics I ordered mine before I even got my car! It's around $1,500 but well worth it.

Do you active dynamic seats? If so, maybe it's on and your wife thinks the seats are moving?

Thanks. I do. But she knows how they behave -- I think.

Break in over, I have started to cut loose.

An absolutely amazing car. It is the fastest accelrating car I have ever driven. It is rock solid in turns and does it beautifully at any legal speed. A slight understeer perhaps but not offensive. I have never driven a super high performance car of this weight and I like it.

BTW the traction and grip seems better than the car I drove a year ago. May be my imagination. Anyone else feel htis way.

Yes, the stock steering wheel leaves a little to be desiered. Espically on a AMG vehicle.

I swapped mine for a MP Designs wheel. You can see the pictures here:

The wheel has come down in price as well now. Some other aftermarket retailers are now carrying it. Performance Products has it for $1295.00 ...
