E55 Engine Clearances

Hey guys, this may be one of the stupidest questions ever asked on the forums so I apologize in advance, but I'm being paranoid about it. I suspect my engine mounts are going bad based off of the vibrations I've started to feel in the car while idling and such and had planned to replace them within the next month. Just yesterday I fell victim to the infamous crankshaft position sensor failure on my car. I managed to restart it and get home without the car dying on me and started poking around the engine bay trying to locate the sensor, which I found. However while I was in there, I couldn't help but think that the engine had moved farther up the engine bay than I remember it being so I wanted to get you all's opinion on it. It seems I can see more of the firewall than I remember and the front engine cover looks way too close to the fan assembly, I can barely fit a finger in between the two. Maybe it's nothing, but I wanted to make sure. And if it is sitting too far forward, could worn engine mounts be the culprit? I can't imagine they would have degraded that fast a week after I felt the symptoms but I don't know. I won't be driving the car for 3 or 4 days while I wait for the crankshaft sensor.

Search about it, there is lot of info around, easy to check. Front to back flex is not what you are looking for with the mounts, it's rotational.

Pop the hood, turn the car on, punch the gas. The driver side of the motor will lift and the passenger side will sink. I can't remember what to look for exactly but it shouldn't lift more than like an inch or so when you punch it with good torque. If you can roll on throttle and watch the engine walk upwards a couple inches it's probably toast.

You can also get under the car and look for orange staining from the hydraulic fluid that has leaked out of the mounts.

That is normal position for the engine. I don't run the front cover due to scatter shield. Behind the engine you should be able to fit you hand down just to get at the transmission filler etc. Go to approx 9min 30 sec

And this one also around 9 min 30 sec conincidentally. Looks like it is going to jump out and eat you.

For the intake? Best not to. Pull the tops of the airboxes off with the full Y pipe from the throttle body as one piece.

Why is this?
It was designed to do so.

The re-installation of the cover was not completed due to an odd scientific anomaly known colloquially as laziness. It also means I am much more likely to check the pulley springs if I don't have to remove the cover each time which is what the shield designer intended.

Those covers also break easily. Years of getting hot and then cooling down doesn't bode well for plastic. I broke off one end of the one on my E63 when pulling it once. According to a dealer tech I know the covers breaking is a very common issue. Luckily the E63 ones are cheap.

If you're pulling it on a somewhat regular basis to look at stuff, I'd just leave it off.

No. It just kind of clips in with a couple of plastic tabs.

Yes, and they are stupidly expensive for no good reason, but they make the job easy. Google "EZ Clip Pliers". Look for the ones with green handles. They are meant for working with EZ Clip AC fittings, but work the same on these airbox clamps.
