This happened today!
I was in the middle of oil change and this happened. The bottom part is fine. Stealer wants $62 plus tax, but it can be found online for as low as $22.
In your experience, is it safe to drive with only the bottom part of the oil filler cap attached while waiting for a replacement? Thanks

if the crankcase air isn't leaking you'll be fine but just be careful. i broke my original one off the same way...i then learned that the oil filler you should always softly tap with a rubber mallet prior to hand removal to break the seal of the rubber gasket.

Yes, my CLK55 had the top part of the cap broken off when I bought it; no leaks. I got a replacement from FCPEuro for about six bucks.

Broke the original cap, and I chose not to drive with it. The thought of oil making a mess, or worse, if tiny plastic bits fell inside . The part wasn't in stock at that time, so I used an original Mercedes cap and it worked great. Can't remember the part #.

I just grasp it with my hand and twist off. But I can understand that some require more force

tap the cap with a rubber mallet to unseat the rubber seal and jar the spring. it will come off easily using your hand after wards. over time the plastic will become brittle and using a socket and wrench will cause this to occur. tap with rubber mallet to avoid this.

I’ll use that approach from now on. Thanks

For anyone who needs a new oil cap do not buy an aftermarket cap. I bought one online and it didn't seal 100% and kept getting the dreaded add oil at next stop light along with blow by since it didn't seal correctly. Finally bought an OEM AMG cap and all is good now.

+1, same with fuel caps.
