Took my bone stock E55 drag racing

Got to the track after about a 45 minute drive there. After tech I lined up and ran the car without a burnout and TC on, wasn't monitoring my IATs, I ran 12.7 @ 112. At this point I decided I need monitor my IATs, I expected closer to 114 mph trap. Connected my OBD2 dongle and my starting IATs were in the 120s, after I launch and reach 165+ at the end of the run, temp was in the low 70s. Most of my runs were right around 12.6-12.7 @ 112mph but I left the car by accident in Sport 2 for all but my last run. Best run of the night like the last few times out was the last run of the night 10 minutes before track closed, the temps were finally in the 60s, took it out of sport 2, raised the car and launched with traction control on 12.4@113mph, starting IATs were in the 110s and hit about 150 at the end. A friend of mine with a eurocharged headers and no mufflers, no tune ran a 12.3 @ 114. Last time out he was running 12.2@ 116.

The obvious issue is my IATs being 50 degrees above ambient, I do have the Bosch 010 pump and this wasn't a pumping issue. The entirety of the intercooler liquid was at 120*F due to too much idling and sitting around during tech and staging. On the drive home with air rushing over the stock heat exchanger the temperatures came down to 20 to 25*F above ambient after about 10 -15min on the freeway. My plan to fix this is to add an auxiliary heat exchanger with an electric fan and see how it does at the track. Possibly an underhood tank so I can add ice.

I also feel like I have a few things wrong with the rear end, under hard acceleration, especially in 1st gear the rear end was trying to steer a bit to the left causing me to break traction at 40mph+. Whenever I ran with TC off the car would break traction @ 20-30 mph and steer left forcing me to correct slightly and back off the throttle to keep it straight. Subframe bushings? Control arms? Toe links?

The cars have open diffs, you do peg leg burnouts when you loose traction.

My C55 also has an open diff, has no problems going straight under hard acceleration with loss of traction without one wheel peel. I can drift it do rolling burnouts and it tracks dead straight, my main issue with that car is an overly intrusive ESP that cannot be switched off without going into dyno mode.

Whenever the rear end breaks loose on my E55 it's an "oh ****" feeling because it isn't predictable and steers the car whichever way the road tilts. Drives buttery smooth, no weird tire wear and handles great but some bushing or ball joint is definitely going out causing the car to feel unpredictable during loss of traction in the rear.

Thats due to toe out. Give yourself some toe in on the rears and it will be a little more stable

@layzie12g that's a nice 60' - how do you launch?

@Fantomas i like the looks of that underhood tank that takes the place of the cabin filter. i feel like my car was a little squirly over rough road but i haven't experienced what you described on the track. do you have any clunking coming out of the rear? i just replaced my rear shocks and it definitely feels more planted and there's no more body in the trunk thud while going over bumps

I'll look into the rear shocks, maybe one is bad and causing the rear end to tilt a bit while squatting, it also makes a noise going over large bumps, one side more than the other.

if the shock is covered in oily grime it's probably leaking and no longer dampening the way it should. the thud noise was only coming out of the right side which was in worse shape than the left but they both needed to be replaced. i got the reman bilsteins from fcp euro and changed them in a couple hours. hope this helps

I know I'm stating the obvious, but an LSD and adjustable toe-links makes for an remarkable improvement overall. An additional benefit is that the toe-links will significantly reduce the load on the rear sub-frame. [Shardul may still offer high quality toe-links]

Always good to see people taking their 55`s to the track! As Agilver said, good to take the load off the sub frame bolt, as we all have seen many of those bolts brake under spirited driving. Hard to change out too. We still have the toe and camber kits and on big time special right now . http://ultimatepd.com/amg-w211-e55-t...nsion-set.html
