I was recently at Hurley's Auto Audio in Tyson's Corner, VA. I was following up on a tiny issue, that was resolved. Anyway, I asked the owner about installing a back up camera to my stock COMAND unit.
He said.... Yes, they can do it, and that the head unit will need to be sent out, for refurbishing. And they can also upgrade it with Apple Car Play as well. For $1800. I thought about it, and that amount seems rather high.
Do you agree? I like that stock unit, I like the functionality of the buttons around the display, and how each have a function. But having an updated head unit with modern technology would be nice.
What do you think. If I'm considering this upgrade, it would certainly be after my LSD install. And I thought that was going to be my last upgrade. Back to the drawing board.

Is that an Audio 20, running NTG 2.5?

I don't know the particulars about the stock head unit, but its the same unit that came in the E55 as well.

The shop owner told me that, they will send it out for modification and coding for the backup camera and Apple CarPlay.
As I want to keep my current head unit. I really haven't committed to the whole idea yet, whether or not I want a backup camera.
But it would be nice to have it. But for $1800, I can just turn my head as always for nothing.

I'd be interested in getting Apple CarPlay and maintaining the OEM headunit. Please let me know what you further information you find out.

I know that there are shops in Cali, that can perform this conversion. I was simply inquiring into the process, as a back-up camera would be nice to have.
I know nothing about Apple Car Play to be totally honest. But if I was to go this route, it wouldn't be until next year. As the fist thing on my plate is a Limited Slip Differential.

Please post a few photos of your leather dash, and leather airbag. I have the CLK BS Instrument Cluster Cover and Alcantara/Leather flat steering wheel from Ledermanz.

Do you know which shops in Cali can do this? I may contact them.

Here are some photos of my dash and airbag. I also changed the wood trim to matte cinamorra. It matches the merlot interior better.

I just need to evaluate whether or not, I want to pay $1800 for the convenience of a back up camera versus just turning my head and looking back I still have the parking sensors after all.

I have been looking in to these a bit (as many have). This unit was recently updated and apparently faster, more stable. Not sure about quality. I know the fiber bypass module sucks but you can wire that to the amp in the back instead.
