'06 E55 AMG Power Steering Noise
At 110,000 miles, my '06 Wagon's power steering pump makes a slight whining noise when turning, especially right after cold starts. It's not the belt. Is this a common snag? What will a new pump cost? Can I buy a rebuilt one?
Thanks in advance.

My 06 makes a noise from the power steering pump most of the time, especially when cold. Oddly, if you run the car hard for a bit, it tends to shut up. I've looked into it a bit, and one possibility I read about is a clogged up filter. Apparently when the filter gets partially clogged up, it can cause cavitation in the fluid and results in this noise. I actually bought a new power steering fluid reservoir, as that is where the filter is located and it is not separately replaceable, but I have not had time yet to replace it. Replacing it looks a bit rough, as there really isn't much room to operate in the area where it sits. I think I am going to have to remove the radiator fan to have any chance at reaching it.
If I get a positive result, I will let you know. The reservoir is pretty cheap, I think like $30 if I remember correctly. Replacing the pump is a bit more costly. I think in the $400 range for a brand new one, and maybe $200 or so for a rebuild one.

I have a pneumatic HF oil extractor. My PS reservoir usually gets drained and filled with the trans and rear diff every 30-40K. Last time I got it with crank case and SC oil change. FWIW; I used to use a turkey baster to change PS fluid. https://mbworld.org/how-tos/a/merced...g-fluid-388634

My 06 E55 with 79K also whines pretty good, esp when cold. I feel like it has gotten worse in the last 6 months. Time to maybe top it off. I have heard this is common on these. Hopefully nothing is about to fail.

Swapped out the power steering reservoir last weekend, and it had no effect on the noise at all. Something on the passenger side of the engine seems to be the cause in my case, but it's really hard to pin down.

MBWorld Fanatic!
I just had my power steering system flushed and refilled with synthetic fluid, and it quieted my pump down tremendously. And you do have to turn the wheel lock to lock several times, to fully work it in.
