DIY for replacing Oil Filter Housing Lower Gasket on W211 E55
As title states, I am trying to find a DIY to change the oil filter housing gasket, on the bottom where it meets the engine. I had my valve cover gaskets, oil/filter change done, but then a week later I noticed this started leaking a slow seep and dripping after parked. I am not sure if they removed this when doing the valve covers and then used the old gasket instead of getting a new one - I don't have time to bring it back to the same shop until after the holidays and I need the car for some upcoming weekend trips.
I understand it is only a couple of bolts and pretty straightforward but do not have the whole picture. Please see picture below.
1) do I need to drain the oil first? I just had an oil change.
2) which gasket is it? I ordered these 2 because was not sure.

Any help is appreciated.

Housing has a 46 mm hollow bolt holding it in place. Torque is 70 Nm per WIS.
Instructions and diagram here:

Go part way down the page to "Mercedes Benz Engine Oil Leaks Front - Oil Filter Housing and Gaskets".
Edit: This guy's thread shows three each gaskets and has plenty of photos...it appears to be an M112 versus the M113 engine.

Be sure to call the parts supplier with your VIN to ensure you obtain the correct gaskets for your engine.

Very annoying that I need to drain and refill the oil as well as take apart the cooler and housing in order to change just the one gasket as I just had the oil and filter changed using Motul...
Do you know if the housing is removed when the valve cover gasket is done? that would explain why it started leaking after the valve covers done, if they removed the oil filter housing but didn't replace gasket(s). Otherwise maybe it was a pinhole leak that got worse because the larger valve cover leak was fixed...
In the link with the pics is very helpful, thank you.

I see no need to drain the oil; perhaps I'm missing something? Anyone?
I see no reason to remove the filter housing to replace the valve cover gasket so it could just be coincidence on the leak. Maybe the valve cover leak was hiding the filter housing leak?

If I don't need to drain the oil that would be great since I'm not looking to spend the $ on new Motul oil to replace a few $5 gaskets when it's only been about 500 miles.
hopefully the belt is not too saturated from the dripping...

Here are the seals you will need to perform the work.
65. A1121840361
59. A1121840261
35. A1121840061
77. A1131850080
I saw a leak from the cam sensor area a few weeks after changing the oil housing/cooler seals. That part is below.
I would also consider cleaning up the power steering reservoir to make sure the leak is not coming from there. The reservoir parts are below.
Good luck!!

Thank you so much, very helpful.
Funny you mention the power steering. They told me the power steering reservoir also has a slight leak. Wouldn't that be PS fluid and not oil, though? Only drip I have is Oil, but maybe I just can't "see" it.

The power steering I did not know about at all until it was at the dealer for alignment and they told me about it when I asked them to check other oil leak.

Thanks, MSG55G will take a look.
I asked the dealer for a quote for fun. $750 for Oil housing gasket and $1400 for power steering reservoir, pump. LOL

I didn’t remove belts (got lazy) and oil did dripped on them and they did squeak at first but stopped once they dried up. Went under belly the next day to clean off nasty oil build up and to verify anymore leak. But the proof is seeing a clean floor in my garage every morning!

completed job and guessed I saved some dinaro. Didn’t change gasket #77 and not seeing any leak. Job was very easy, unscrewed both upper & lower oil lines then the 46mm bolt inside oil filter housing and out it came now you’ll have easy access to remove the four T30 screws. All three gaskets were hard as rocks.

We have snow here today and rain thru the weekend but maybe next week I can try to tackle it. No garage space currently to do the work so may just do it at my office parking garage....
I didnt order new belts and am unsure I need to do those at same time, though they already got some oil on them. Hoping to hold out til spring on belts etc.
The leak from there has definitely gotten worse in the last two weeks probably from the cold weather in addition to driving it....

Thanks, that is good to know.. I ordered all the gaskets anyway but have the ones for the filter housing. So, you did not need to drain the oil at all? I am assuming had to just top up after doing this.

btw, you need a 3/4 to 1/2 socket adapter for 46mm socket unless you have a 3/4 extension and breaker bar. Autozone sell one for $9.

I've done this twice on my E55. Never had to drain the oil either time. Just find an object to stick in the expose hole when you take the filter assembly off - like a towel or something.
Be prepared for the lower oil line to leak a lot of oil out. Hvae rags underneath the assembly to catch any, and even better a cork to seal the plug.
Also, be very careful in not cross-threading the 46mm bolt. Being so large with a fine pitch, it's very easy to cross thread. ONLY thread it on by hand, then use a torque wrench to tighten.
It might be a good idea to do the power steering fluid reservoir seal at the same time. It's in the same general area, and is bound to start leaking at some point on these cars. FCPEuro sells a kit with everything, but you should only need the seal.

didn’t drain oil. The most oil dripping is when removing housing, overall rough estimate it may be LESS than 1/8th of a qt oil dripping out. Put a towel over belt if you can. Spray parts cleaner around base of housing and between power steering reservoir prior removing oil filter cap to clean up the dirt build up. Disconnect breather hoses for access to E10 nut on upper & lower oil lines.

I drove it this weekend on a couple of 1hr+ drives and the leak does not appear to be getting worse, but want to fix it soon...

I took a look more closely at the power steering reservoir and it was cracked and leaking a bit... due to time and weather, I ended up taking it to the same shop that did the valve cover gaskets and they only charged me a few hours' labor to do all of the above gaskets, power steering reservoir, PS fluid flush and replace, and to clean up the belts and oil residue all over. In 30 degree weather I did not mind spending a couple bucks vs freezing my *** off for probably twice the time it took them to do it.
Funny enough, I had asked the dealer for a quote to do all the work, it was around $2k.... the parts + shop bill was under 1/4 of that....
fingers crossed no other similar leaks for a while!!!
