*Video* How does this M156 Sound?

Hey so I'm looking to buy a E63 and this is a video of one of them running that I am looking at, to purchase. Can anyone chime in and tell me what you think of the sound of the engine? Does it sound like any kind of ticking? Appreciate any feedback!

Sounds good to me! That ticking you’re referring to is the injector noise and very normal.

Appreciate it! Good to hear! Definitely plan on opening the valve cover and inspecting further when purchased and all said and done. I do plan on very soon swapping out head bolts and lifters and cams if necessary on which ever one I buy. But just don't want to buy one that already has/shows symptoms of the lifters and cam failing. Thanks!

I agree 100% but I don't think the seller would allow me to open up his engine just to check lol. I have an 07 E350 bought it used about 5.5 years ago w/ 108k now has 184k. Very solid car if you got one that didn't have that balance shaft sprocket wearing out, luckily I did. Graduated college about 7 months ago, got a pretty decent job, so now I can finally afford the W211 E63 as well as being able to afford the expenses that come with it. Pretty handy with cars plan on doing all the maintenance and repairs with this car myself as I did with my E350. So even it comes down to changing out cam shafts and the lifters I'm prepared, and for head-bolts, that's a walk in the park. But before the wreck how did you like the m156?

^^ E55's are better end of story. Unless you spend big money and strengthen the trans and put a supercharger on the w211 e63 a well sorted e55 is a more reliable and imo just easier to live with aswell as being faster per dollar. I have fixed 7 speed issues aswell as mess around with cams on the m156. The standard 722.9 7 speed in particular after working on turbine speed sensors puts me right off those.

All these mercs v6 or v8 with the dohc heads with variable timing are slightly dodgy imo the m156 being probably the worst along with the w211 v6 and 550 v8 I think. (I havent researched the newer 4.0 biturbos as much as the others yet)

The m113 or K is the most reliable, simplest to work on and generally all round best performance engine MB has ever made. As long as your not shooting for stupid numbers like over 700hp they are great cars.

Getting straight out of a w211 e55 into a e63 is a real eye opener. Theres just no torque in comparison you find yourself hunting for gears constantly to keep it singing. An m156 with full bolt ons im sure would be no joke though.

Your looking at about $6000 for this job. As far as replacing parts, head bolts will cost about $220, Bucket Lifters $960, Cams $3200, and about $1500 for labor. So you see this isn't a cheap fix.

I will never let money be the limiting factor to enjoy life, like I said in an earlier post above, graduated college 7 months ago, have a very decent job, also single, thus, no kids. So for me I can afford this expense right now. Sure I can go buy another newer, faster car (not Mercedes) with possibly more power. But I'm one of those "people" that thinks "MB, the best or nothing." As well, I've heard great things about the big NA M156, something I WANT to experience.

But minus the $1500 tho! My dad was a certified mechanic back in his day. Owned his own shop for awhile in SoFLo. I too built a couple of motors from the bare block, also converted a supra from auto to a manual in our garage. He's so skilled (my dad) he has a post lift on his property (VERY convenient!), what I'm saying is he doesn't have it just to rotate tires if you get what I'm saying.

Money returns, time does not.

I rest my case..........

(Sidenote: As soon as I received the vid of the car running I sent it to my dad and he said sounds good, he never owned a M156, so wanted to get couple of ears that actually own the car lol)

I'm not in anyway suggesting that you can't afford the repairs. I was just stating the cost, that's it. I've owned 3 AMG's equipped with the M156 engine, and I love it. Some will disagree with me. But it's a great engine, once it's little issues are corrected.
