Some more M5 info

NOTICE: This is not a flame/troll message from me just an informative thread.

First, some info on the new M5 from www.bmw.co.uk

http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=44378

Here is some more info on the M5 presentation in Spa-Francorchamps.
Hi all,

Here are some more details from the BMW M-Manager for sales an Orderprocessing in Europe, very kind man.

1) Fog Lamps

They needed to remove them for the cooling of the engine and the brakes.

2) Black inserts in the mirror

The black inserts in the mirror are only for decoration, but the mirror has specific function it will increase the ground effect of the car. That's why they have such a strange shape.

3) The seats

Even the seats have a special function when you are in track-mode and you take heavy turns the side of the seat will be insufflated (ex. when you take a right turn the left side of the seat will be insufflated that the driver and the passenger are better maintained in the seat).

4) M-Button

The specific M-Button in the steering wheel can be programmed individually with several functions like ex: POWER-Function with DSC off and the fastest SMG Mode or or or.

5) Smg

The SMG has the same functions like the well known "old" Smg (Launch-Control and others). New is only that when you are in the manually position Kick-down and the car will shift down one or two gears by itself to overtake. A manual gearbox will not be available.

6) The Power-Button

The Power funtion P500 must be activated by yourself every time you start the car. Comment: This is not to preserve the engine but for the city there is no need for 507 Hp.

7) Official presentation

The official presentation will be at the Mondial de l'automobile in Paris from september 25 to october 10.
If possible I try to be invited to the press presentation in late september for a test drive.

8) Official specs

The official 0-100, 0-200 and V-max are not confirmed by BMW and aren't quite concluded. For the moment they have disscussion about the V-Max (250, 280 or even removing the speed limiter).
His opinion was that the car will be limited again to 250 but he says that it will be as easy like "always" to remove the V-max.
After I said that I've read somethin about 328 km/h, he started laughing and said that this is an easy take for the car.

9) The delivery

Delivery terms are by now late November 04 (Germany and +/- The rest of Europe).

10) M6

For the M6 the car is planed for late spring 05 but it will "only" have 507 Hp not more. The car is quite more agile because of its weight and deeper center of gravity and that's "enough" progression.
For the Moment there will not be an M6 convertible or M6 Csl.

The man was extremly pleasant he gave me a V-card and told me to give him a call when I'm in Munich to visit the M-GMBH.

hi guys,

BMW is making a mistake not having a manual transmission. advanced
as the SMG's are they have an odd feel to them and a certain
amount of a learning curve is needed to operate them smoothly. it seems to me that
BMW would be best served to either have a true manual 6 speed or
a 6 speed automatic.

I can't believe given all this delay they can't figure out a way to put fog lights in the M5.

Sorry, I didn't know you considered the Hyundai a rival to the E55.

SMG III shifts 20% faster than SMG II AND it is more smoother.

If it wasn't for BMW then MB would be POS and vice versa. Don't be ignorant to the competition its what makes both manufacturers great. If you can't appreciate any good car whether or not it is a rival then i don't believe you are a true enthusiast.

There are more important things to worry about than fog lights.

I agree few would be able to say that SMG's are inferior since few have tried the SMG III in person.

I agree that it may affect initial sales though.
I learnt to drive a manual when i was 16. Now that was a learning curve which btw you only do once.
I know several people who can't drive automatics smoothly aswell....lol. :p

Oh, and an automatic transmission doesn't comply with BMW M's formula.

hi guys,

i test drove a new M3 about a month ago.
it had the SMG transmission. the main impression
i got from the driving experience is why??? it doesn't
feel as smooth as an automatic and the driver interaction
with the automobile was quirky at best. the only good thing
that SMG offers is someone who doesn't drive a stick can
actually operate the car if need be.

Didnt the E55 had it first in w211 e55.....I think bmw copied that option? Or am i wrong?

Let's see. Can you shift in 0.08 seconds? Can you perform PERFECT heal-and-toe downshifts EVERY time? SMG is much more efficient on the track. Plus, the new M5 will come with SMG III (7-speed) which not only shifts about 20% faster than SMG II it is also more SMOOTHER. BMW obviously realized that if this is the only transmission they will be offering, it needs to be perfect for "general" use. Thus they have made sure it will be smooth enough. SMG III will shift in about 0.05 seconds.

When i test drove SMGII i felt that its not automatic when it shifted and stuff, I liked it alot, But if smgIII is 20% faster and smoother doesnt it make the car AUTOMATIC lol hahaha , oh and again Mercedes presented 7 speed first again... and i think BMW copied them again...

I'm not sure on who invented what but it is irrelevant. Whats so special about a 7 speed. Its just an extra ratio over a 6 speed that itself is no advancement really its a natural progression.

The ratios are closer with any 7 speed tranny, so acceleration times are improved to certain distances. Once you learn how to use SMG II, it is just as smooth as a manual and not just for the track. You actually have to drive it mentally like a manual. This topic of manual vs SMG has been discussed over 1,000,000,000,000 times in various forums.

damn you guys. please please please dont compare M5 vs. E55. they are both great cars!. definitely, BMW will try to make the new M5 faster than E55 AND MB will make the next E55 faster and better than the M5 and so on...... it's how the business works. still both cars are great. I am just tired seeing people talking trash about M5 and thinking that E55 is the fastest car in the world. hell no, E55 is still MB, not a lamborghini. so instead of talking trash about M5 and vice versa, why don't we just discuss about pos./neg. about those cars.

WTF?? How does that make it an slushbox?? Does it have a torque converter?? NO.

And WTF is this "BMW copied" crap?? Haven't you heard?? The next S-Class will have an iDrive type controller?? Who's copying who now?

Oh, and what about the Ferrari Enzo?? That car only comes with an SMG type transmission. You don't see to be complaing about that one.
