Tire diameter change upset cruise control , ABS
I now have a replacement 2005 E55 for my 2006 E55 which blew its engine. I put the old wheels on the new car which upset the computers, blocking cruise control and saying "drive to dealer" for ESP and ABS. The power steering went 'heavy' also. No such issues on the old car with the same tire diameters. The rears are 285 x 40, fronts 265 x 35 on 18 inch SL55 wheels. I presume it is the ratio of the diameters it doesn't like. Can the errors be coded out? Cheers.

So both my 2006 SL55 and E55 had no problems with that wheel tire combination. My 2005 E55 did not like them at all. It would appear that the 2005 car compares the relative rotations of the front and rear wheels while the 2006 cars use a different system which does not compare them.

I get the same thing. I think I actually went too tall rear with stock height front and I get the hunting in my 05 as well. Tried changing tires sizes in star as well with no luck.

Awesome, well I'm glad I am not the only one, so this theory makes sense then. Cool. Just have to leave it then while running these tyres. Thanks for chipping in ?

I took the fronts off my SL55 which are 275 x40 and closer in diameter to the 285 x 40 rears put them on the E55. All issues including steering went back to normal. The 265 x 35 tyres from the E55 went on the 2006 SL55 which had the same 285 x 40 rears and it had no issues. The steering goes heavy when the warning goes red on the 2005 cars. The steering is unaffected in both 2006 cars when a warning goes red.
