DIY E63 Engine Mounts?

I've been looking for a DIY guide for doing engine mount replacement on a E63. I can only find guides for either E55 or C63. I found one youtube video for a CLS which is probably the closest. The easiest procedure is to drop the steering rack as far as I see. I still would like a step-by-step DIY for the E63 engine mounts. Does anyone know if a guide exists?

Please post or PM me your VIN and I'll check my copy of WIS for the procedure.

The C63 should be fine to follow; I followed numerous instruction on here; let me find the ones I followed; but yes you drop the steering rack to get the driver side one out, and didn't have to for the passenger side. I did the task last summer.

Also, if you need to do any other work like flex discs (two of them), dropping the exhaust out of the way would be better. Yes you still slightly lift the engine with a wood block on a jack, but then no need to mess with the steering rack and you'll have tons of space to get them out/in and tightening.

I don’t need to do any work on the flex discs, but I would be willing to drop the exhaust if it gives more space. Is dropping the exhaust possible if I only have jack stands and a ramps?

yes I’d think so. ramps for one set and jack stands for the other. use your jack (with some wood as support) to lower your exhaust, then utilize it to raise your engine. Sounds feasible

I just read the WIS on this and they say the exhaust manifolds need to come out as well. I assume because they make it possible to remove the top bolt from the top of the engine. But if the exhaust is out I assume you can access the top bolt from the bottom right?

No the manifolds don’t need to come out. See this picture for when I dropped my exhaust to replace the headers (exhaust manifolds).

I don’t remember exactly how I have done this however it calls for a special wrench that I did not have. We have welded one at about 45 degree the angle and it did the job. It probably can be done with harbor freight wrench set. All I know I did not remove exhaust or steering rack. There are bushes in the rack that is replace if you choose to go that route however keep in mind that once you’ll unbolt the rack you will need to realign the car. Good luck.

I used this special wrench, its a bit fiddly but it works!

Yes, that is the required wrench! Not possible to do without! Simply disco each side of the exhaust from the headers (2 Female Torx ratchet head Bolts each side), then disco one side engine mount by using that special wrench on the top side of the engine mount and also remove the bolt attaching the bottom side as well. Then I used a bottle Jack propped up high enough to reach the bottom of the engine while using a small piece of wood as a cushion to protect the engine from being damaged from the bottle Jack. You have to lift the engine a couple inches each side in order to have room to remove/install new engine mounts. By leaving the “other side” attached, you ensure the engine doesn’t shift around as it might if one were to loosen both sides at the same time! It would be a good time to also replace the Tranny Mount while the exhaust is disco’d from the Manifolds.

I busted the move on the upgraded Black series Tranny Mount (Not the pricy engine mounts though!) and when you compare them side by side, as you did, the “black series” shows no air gaps, however, when driving I certainly cannot tell the difference as I might if I were to do upgraded engine mount from EC or Creative?
