As one that has had a upper oil pan leak, it is an immense job, I wrote a thread about it on here. Anyway, it is not cheap, and the entire suspension and subframe need to come out, including the steering rack. It’s a labor intensive job.

The CPS can be replaced, but if you not having issue with it, I would leave it, as these aren’t a high failure item.

UPDATE: about 8000 miles since my last post, and the car has no leaks. Rear main seal was replaced around 136k miles, car now at 144k miles.

For anyone in the future experiencing a large oil leak from near the engine/transmission area, it's probably the rear main seal. Have it replaced at an indy for around $800, which is what it cost me for my 2009 W211 E63.

Hey Hachiroku!

I sure wish I busted the move when I took of my my Heads to be rebuilt to replace the Crank Drive Chain and slide rails as well as the Oil Cooler Chain its slide rails, but at the time, I didn’t want to mess with the Radiator! Ironically, after finishing the front, and then the entire rear end suspension, bushings, hubs, Rear Main Seal, 3.06 Gears and LSD, I went to start it up and noticed a radiator leak! So I only then replaced it and again had access, even already removed/replaced the A/C Compressor, the entire front bumper, as well as the PS Pump, so that would have only required me to remove/replace the Water Pump, Alternator and I would have been golden, but alas I didn’t! The main issue was determining how to remove that damn Crank Pulley? What a missed opportunity! I do have those replacement parts in a box for “next time”!

Now to my question, you reference the ingenuity of AMG having the “Access Port” that is seemingly “Oil related” on the back side of the Timing Cover? What is it by the way? It looks to be located between the AC Compressor and the Crankshaft?

hi guys, i have a big oil leak. i had both oil pan gaskets (or RTV) replaced per WIS/ASRA. still leaks. dealer says my intake manifold is leaking. this sounds incorrect as i would expect a check engine light if the mixture was wrong. but, i watch a video, the gut pulls off the intake manifold and there is oil in it. i don't really get why there is oil there. i don't see any oil pathways in the manifold. maybe it goes through the throttle bodies? even so, the car doesn't blow smoke and is still very quick. A/F must be OK. any ideas? perhaps the leak is just a valve cover gasket? any ideas? thank you!!!

the manifold pulls in oil through the crankcase ventilator, thats just what it does and as your gasket goes out or if you develop a crack in the manifold, the oily mist makes it's way out. it wouldn't code right away unless it was pretty gnarly, functionally most cars suck in their own oil to burn it off to prevent crankcase pressure buildup which blows out gaskets and puts extra wear and tear on your components

do me a favor and replace the PCV in the back of the engine too.

thanks ChrisHimself,
it's leaking like a quart every 400 miles or so. lots of oil left in my garage and even when i just back in, there're a few milliliters. unsightly. but, at that rate, it's not a mist. but maybe it's just pcv? but this is a real leak. i'd be willing to bet that it's not the intake manifold but is really a cracked valve cover. when i had the head bolts changed, the mechanic did crack one of them. we just put it back together with JB weld. maybe it gave up?

disregard anything i've said then. In that case you have a fairly special situation. Do you have the updated valve covers? They're plastic so you'd know. theres an updated valve cover for the M156 1560162005

i couldn't tell you what the advantage is, I can only guess that it deals with warpage/heat better than the thin metal guys we're used to.
