ADVICE: Valve Spring Removal TOOL

Hello Forum,

I need some advice on the best valve spring compressor tool for the m156? *The heads will be attached to the block, working out the the bay.*

Im having a puff of white smoke out the exhaust only on start up and oil consumption has increased, id usually have to fill up 1Q every ~1000 miles, now it consumes a little faster than that.

Coolant has maintained its level and did head-bolts already. (Not the coolant burning)

Also has new PCV Valve with Catch Can, so even if the PCV broke that fast the Catch Can should be catching the oil thats passing by the PCV.

Head-bolts, PCV, Catch Can all have been done at the same time (10,000 miles ago).

No oil leaks anywhere, I have a personal car lift so I'm in and under this car all the time.

Biggest give away is the puff of white smoke at and only at start-up.

Therefore I have numbered it down to the Valve seals failing.

So going to replace all Valve seals.

Need help if anyone has removed the valve springs with heads attached and what tool did they use. Makes it a-little harder when the springs are recessed not like a chevy head with exposed springs. I want to buy multiple tools to have on hand if one or the other does not work.

The guys at fcp recommended this:

Gonna try this one but looking for others as well.

Thanks

Thank you! Good to hear success with this tool compared to the 1 reviews it has on fcp.

Hope taking care of the seals will cure the oil consumption and puff of smoke.

Will definitely return to give an update to hopefully help others with this problem if it happens to them. Should be doing it in a week or two then gonna give it another week or so before posting results.

Read a couple threads saying how the puff of white smoke is normal on start up. No way this should be normal! Lol

Thank you SICAMG for your continuous help on this forum

Your welcome and thanks !!! But.....hold on for one second , you say the smoke is white? It should be blue if it's oil.
Also on your PCV catch can, not to sound like an *** but you do have it in line correctly right. I have seen them with the lines reversed and oil consumption really ramps up from there.

yea well kinda white but not like a thick white smoke so kinda hard to tell if it has a blue tint to it or not, it dissipates very quickly. It has started a couple weeks ago and has been sitting ever since. The catch can has been on for 10k miles and would fill about a 1/4 cup of oil every 3-4 weeks so it’s definitely doing its job. With this just starting up I’m pretty sure the lines are in the correct place. But when I was installing, the intake was completely off the engine and followed that wistec pdf file that you can google search that had directions for install their catch can. Bought unbranded fittings on eBay that matched exactly to the wistec fittings but cost $80 instead of the insane wistec markup.

Also pulled the spark plugs and had the normal signs of burning oil. So I’m 99% sure the seals are going. There is another guy on the forums that I read that his c63 was burning oil and the smoke on start up w/ 87-90k miles and needed new seals. My E has 99k.

OK cool. Normally with valve seals is that if you let it idle hot for say 2-3 min. and than crack the throttle you will get a big puff of smoke out the tail pipes. Easy way to figure it out.

FWIW I have had pretty impressive results from what I believe was leaky valve stem seals with the Blue Devil "rear main sealer" product. I poured it in on a road trip out of desperation and actually has substantially slowed my oil consumption and I have not seen ANY tailpipe smoke even when I hammer on it. Kind of impressed. I believe it is the same chemistry as AT-205 which is pretty well regarded.

Good to know Kevin.
Also to add to this a short story on my 1998 Crown Vic. I have had it for 15 years and change the oil every 4,000 miles with synthetic oil every time. It has 254,000 miles on it and I know exactly when to add oil in the last 100k, 1/2 qt at 2,000 miles each time. It also in the that last 100,000 miles always blows a small cloud of blue oil smoke anytime it idles, stop lights traffic ...always and you can smell it. Tried a few different oil additives as well.
So I decided that it has served me well and no sense in putting synthetic in anymore, just regular old cheapo oil. Now it burns nothing. I never add to it ever and don't even bother to pull the stick and check. Crazy huh !

Bought all the parts already and this being a car I plan to keep till it gives I will fix or replace as signs show. With this one I want to replace.

But may be something I consider doing every couple oil changes from now on

Eh right after I wrote that I checked the oil level and realized the consumption is back to exactly what it was before and I realized I am seeing tailpipe emissions once again when I hammer on it. Around 500 miles/qt. I added a second bottle so the experiment continues.

Yes. I think it needs a rear main and valve seals. Just trying to buy time with the additive...
