Is Mercedes getting rid of V8?

Mercedes-Benz kills the V8 for 2022 models over reported supply chain woes. They include everything from the AMG GT, the G-Class and a slew of other AMG-badged performance sedans and SUVs. The only vehicles that will continue with their V8 engines are the S-Class and Maybach S-Class.

Mercedes-Benz is a billion dollar company, and have been producing vehicles for almost 100 years. Stating supply chain woes, I don't believe that for a second. This is there way, to restructure to produce smaller engines, and to phase out the V8 to comply to a changing environment.
What do you think? Post your comments.

That was my impression. I can't help but feel like this push toward electric is in response to government pressure and less because people are demanding more $70k+ vehicles. Then again, given where any Mercedes V8 vehicle sits in the market, it makes some sense to go full electric. What I don't care for is alternative ICE solutions to the V8. I like V8s.

Mercedes stated that new forthcoming C63 will have a 4 cylinder and produce roughly 450 hp. Granted you can produce a lot of hp from a 4 cylinder, but it will not be the same as a V8. That is why, I keeping my 14 year old W211 E63. There is no replacement for displacement

Yes. Which is why I've long thought it was idiotic for countries across the world to tax based on engine displacement. For example, American V8s were long producing solid power from a physically compact, light and reliable engine WITH reasonable fuel economy.

Cars are changing. I am not too worried right now, I might be if I needed a brand new daily driver but I would buy a used car in that case. Any kind of high performance hybrid or pure electric should have heaps of torque and fun. I can't see a 4 banger delivering the same experience as a V8. They might be ok in a A45 but it isn't going to cut it in an E-class. However 6 cylinders have been great for a while, pure ICE nissan GTR or hybrid NSX etc. As for supply chain woes, I can't see how it is much different making a V6 vs a V8, a couple of extra pistons, rods and some more metal used in their existing developed molds and machining processes. Now finding a pile of rare earth metals for a tonne of batteries would be a more believable supply chain woe.

I imagine they will only briefly utilise hybrids until pure electric is more long term reliable in terms of battery range capability, speed of charge. My next new car purchase will definitely be an additional manual ICE to keep the involved driving experience alive. I plan to keep the E55 until electric technology, performance and infrastructure (in my country) makes sense to switch, it isn't there yet in my opinion.

We will all see this happen come next year, when Mercedes puts everything but a V8 in their cars including AMG's. The base engine that the C63 will gain already exists in non-electrified form: It's a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder currently found in the A45 AMG, where it churns out 416 hp and 396 lb-ft of torque.

It probably doesn't have anything to do with the engine itself but maybe something with controls used on the V8s. Sensors, ECUs, etc.

Likely due to chip shortage. Their cars require some high tech electronics these days. Whether an entry level A220 or top level S65 AMG.

The V8 powered cars are all their top-trim vehicles. They sell very few of these. The bottom trim cars like the A class, CLA, GLA, or GLB are their highest selling cars with the highest profit margin.

If they have to choose between building their lowest selling, most expensive cars versus their highest selling, cheapest cars then that's what they will do.

I think it’s miss direction, Mercedes is most likely retooling their plants to comply with the global direction with smaller more efficient power plants. Which is slowly phasing out V8’s in their line up.

You didn’t learn your lesson the first time 😆
Hold on to your V8 powered AMG, as they soon will be rare.

I don't think the size of the engine has anything to do with electronics. It doesn't matter if you have a 4 cylinder or a V8, they both need a single ECU, a TCU, crank position sensor, MAP or MAF, water and air temperature sensors, oil as well. They will differ in number of coil packs and cam sensors but that is about it. The european regulations are pretty tough and I am guessing they are only allowed a certain percentage of their line up which doesn't line up with the clean and green image. The S class might be different but I can't think of any major luxurious differences between say an A class and a C class that would require a pile more electronics, they all have power windows, A/C, heated seats, an entertainment system etc.

Sorry I didn't word that very well, I meant what cars did you buy to replace them?

I struggle to think of anything I could get to replace the E55 for similar money except another AMG from around that period.

My apologies for misunderstanding. And Yullie36, sorry for hijacking your thread, my friend.

First time, for a 2014 C63 , second time for an original MKIV 1994 Supra TT 6spd (still have this, probably my favorite car of all time , I was 18 when Fast and Furious came out haha).

I just knew I had to buy another E55. This is the only car I’ve owned that has never left my heart and I just have to own one.

MR2s are amazing. Always loved the short wheelbase on those. Keep it stock, these Japanese turbo cars are addictive, worse than German cars haha.

It took every bit of four years to find my Supra. All original, stock, factory 6spd, 42k miles, one owner USDM LHD. I Went single turbo (710rwhp) and it’s the most adrenaline-rush feeling you can get with a car ..There’s nothing like it though once boost hits.

I was talking today with my friend who works at MB and he believes it's really a V8 emission issue. I'm wondering if it also may be a CAFE MPG issue.
