Drive Cycle

Hey anyone ever pay attention to how long a drive cycle there is to set the monitors for these cars, My evap is still not ready at 125 miles since MIL cleared.

This place is a joke.
EVAP check only occurs at a specific fuel tank level, between 1/4 and 3/4 tankfull iirc

Well that explains my endless driving around after a fill up !!! LOL Plus the car will get 22mph on the highway and that doesn't help.... Thanks man.

I think it also has to be idling for like 20 minutes as well. Evap wasn't ready when I bought mine and I got all nervous but it turns out it's just the most fickle system to ready itself after a battery reset.

Yea I just did the idle thing but my problem is the idle is ever so slightly above the thresh hold and after 20-25 min it will show "idle air control" pending. Than I have to clear the pending code before it pops on and ...back to the begining again.I tried to bring it down but it is at the max in STAR at 630rpm.
The car is never idled like that for so long so it was never an issue but now since I did the engine over my Evap will not set. Connecticut does allow 1 monitor to not be ready and still pass smog so I guess it will be OK. Might try my stock throttle body is see where it sits for idle.
How long did yours take Kevin ? My Ford sets in 30 miles for all monitors LOL

Honestly I would just take it in with the evap not ready. It should pass. As long as that's the only thing.

Thats what I will do.
It sucks I cant get the idle down just a tad more but I am going to swap my old throttle body on just for sheets and giggles and see what happens.

Any chance the purge leak test has been turned off with your tune? It can be turned off/on with DAS developer mode.

I will take a look where ever it is in Star but I would say no it's not. I normally do major work to the car after I go through smog so that I have two years in front of me for any issues ....like the one I have now. But the engine letting go was not planned for.

Well my E55 just attempted it's first EVAP check at about 2 bars below the 3/4 mark. I've got a new charcoal canister w/shutoff valve installed and got the red "check gas cap" warning with a flashing yellow fuel symbol. I believe the shutoff valve may be wired backwards as there were some parts updates and maybe a tech bulletin from MB regarding this problem. I'll swap the wires (or MB sells an adapter harness) and see how it goes. No emissions testing here, but I did have very strong fuel odors (it's not the tank) after filling up.

My saga just got interesting. I check with our IM test garage and they verified for sure one monitor is ok and also have Connecticut rules stating that is correct.
So today after endless driving and 20 min idles to set it I gave up. But I looked at my old test sheets and see that 3 test's prior going six years back it showed ready and the last test two years ago Evap was not ready ! So looks like she won't be ready yet again LOL

Here's a screenshot from my failed EVAP test. Important notes, fuel tank just over 1/2 full, 0mph speed, and 13 minutes since start. The fault occured while waiting at a traffic light. I ran the test again through Xentry today and it passed. I think the shutoff valve may have been stuck from dust.

I would say you are correct. A massive leak like that and than it's OK ?? Had to be the valve open or a fuel cap not even on...and it was of course.

Yes, the gas cap was on yesterday. I had installed a new charcoal canister maybe a year ago. However, I also used DAS developer mode to turn off the purge leak test- As I often got the code for a minor purge leak. On a 17 year old car with old hoses, etc. I wasn't concerned with fixing that. However, I have been noticing strong gas fumes after filling up, driving a while, then parking in my garage. I recently decided to look into it, the fumes were from the RR wheel well. My fuel tank and pumps were replaced under warranty a few years ago. It seemed the purge system was not operating correctly, and I checked over several days by placing my hand on the purge valve under the hood at idle, and noticed it never seemed to be working (the telltale tapping noise/fell) I went back in dev mode, and turned the leak test back "on" along with the "1mm" setting for a leak- there is also a .5mm setting. The next day I noticed the purge valve was now "ticking" and I filled up, drove a bit and parked in the garage with no fuel odors. I think the setting to turn off the leak test also turned off the entire purge system! It's all in German, so who knows for sure. After running the full tank down to just over half is when the fault happened. Because I turned off the leak test, that valve probably hasn't moved in over a year.
After working on my car today, including performing a manual leak test (passed) and verifying the shutoff valve was opening and closing when actuated through DAS,(by attaching a 3/4 hose to the canister outlet and blowing into it) I let it idle for around 30 minutes while checking some other things. I went back to the readiness monitor in XENTRY and found the EVAP had passed. Driving home the same route as yesterday I had no further problems.

I posted this in my build thread about how to do the drive cycle for our cars: https://mbworld.org/forums/c219/7351...ml#post8231075
