W211 E55 fuel system harness at 210,000 miles

Well, so much for my attempt to install a Creative Steel fuel filter and document it for you guys. I think it would have been a good post...

Instead, as soon as began disassembly and I looked at the connectors and top hat, I discovered melted and broken insulation of the original OEM car harness connector and the top hat plastic surrounding the power pins showed signs of severe melting. (Trivia, did you know these plastics melt at approximately 300 degrees F?).

So...full kit ordered from FCPEuro plus one extra fuel pump adapter cable (211-540-07-00) from which I will use one of the connectors to repair the OEM harness in the car. I still need to pull the trunk panel and inspect the 70-amp relay now that it has four and one-half years and 85,000 miles on it.

Remember, boys and girls, keep an eye on the fuel pump electrical system.

I cut off the end of the stock harness, cut the adapter cable in two, then spliced the adapter cable connector onto the stock harness. I used copper ferrules crimped securely over twisted copper wires, then slid pre-installed heat shrink tubing over the ferrules and shrunk the tubing, then placed a double wrap of electrical tape over the tubing. While I was at it I swapped pins one and two wires so I could remove the need for the adapter cable and placed a note onto the metal lid to alert any future techs working on the car.
