Advice needed on refilling after 722.6 gearbox drain

Hi all, I swapped out my conductor plate just yet while I had my car up on jackstands (only on the front). During the replacement I drained 6 liters (6.3 quarts) of gearbox oil. Now I read something about overfilling the gearbox after 4 quarts of oil, is this correct? If not, can I just add the 6.3 quarts and start up the car?

What would be the best method for me to follow?

Put the 6.3 back in.

Engine running at operating temp. Add a quart. Get in the car, with foot on the brakes put the gear selector in various modes (R, N, D) a few times, then put it back in park. Repeat until level is correct. This method might be overkill, it's just what I've done for years because I'm paranoid and transmissions are expensive.

I wouldn't even attempt this job without the dipstick, though

I have gathered throughout the years that 70mm from the bottom of the pan is the level that is needed. The factory dipstick doesn’t extend to the bottom of the pan, from what I understand , so lots of people have used dipsticks that hit the bottom and measured 70mm
up from there

I have the dipstick, so I will be able to measure correctly. I also noted down that measuring should be done with the engine running and that the correct level is absolutely essential for these gearboxes.

So let me get this straight @Sulaco :
-I add the 6.3 quarts with the engine off
-Start the engine
-Foot on the brakes
-Put the gear selector in various modes (R, N, D) a few times
-Then put it back in park
-With the engine running measure it and add oil until it sits between the bottom 2 lines
-Drive for 20 mins or so
-Measure again with engine running and add oil until it sits between the upper 2 lines

The driving it and checking it again for upper marks is just due to ATF expanding quite a lot when hot. Hopefully that isn't stating the obvious.

If it is correct when cold, it'll be right when hot. If it shifts well and in range, let it be.

I didnt know that to be honest, its my first automatic car. Thanks @sexyxe for the clarification

With manuals or differentials its a lot easier. Open filler plug, open drain plug. Put in drain plug, fill it with oil until it drips out. Close filler plug

No sweat. Having two sets of marks just makes it easier depending on when you check it (15c or 70c). I agree that a manual or diff is far easier to get right, they are also unbelievably forgiving in comparison.

Hehe exactly

Currently at work, I will fill it up with 6.3 quarts when I'm home and get it from the axle stands and start the engine then let it level out a little before I start measuring.

I will probably do this again in the near future, then replace all O-rings. I also found this older thread where replacing the PWM solenoid makes a huge difference: https://mbworld.org/forums/c32-amg-c...em-solved.html

Found this video from Meyle, where they fill it up with 5 liters after draining it. In other words, I will fill it up with the 6.3 quarts like @Sulaco mentioned and take it from there

To be clear, when refilling, I only put in 1 quart at a time. I don't try to move the car until I suspect it's full.

I have a followup question, I refilled the gearbox and started the car and went through the gears. But I noticed something strange, it would drive? Not in drive and not in reverse...(also not in neutral). I hooked up the icarsoft and noticed that it seems to select the wrong gear as opposed to the gear selector.

I just drained the fluid again to look at the yellow lever/selector arm on the valve body (next to the leave sprint). I suspected I mounted it back wrong, but it looks ok to me. Could you verify for me please? Is this just a case of resetting the adaptation values?

Never mind, I forgot to do the transmission adaptation reset. I used the 2nd method
