W211 facelift airbag cover removal?

So, I installed a W211 E63 steering wheel in my 2006 E55, Everything seems to work, but when pushing on the airbag cover, below the center of the star, there seems to be a gap. It feels like there is space between the cover and the airbag itself so the cover material wrinkles slightly before the horn is activated. Is this normal on older airbags? Can I remove the cover from the assembly and add something like a high density foam?

I wouldn't fiddle with the airbag. Especially not the area that is supposed to break in case the airbag has to deploy.

At a minimum I would like to remove the cover to see what is under it. It does not see correct that there is so much space between the cover and the airbag itself.

There is a gap, trust me. When, I received my new Alcantara wheel, it was the same. If you remove the airbag, you will see the gap, this is for airbag expansion.
If you need to activate the horn push the horn symbols at the top of the wheel.

Thank you for confirming this. If it is normal, I will leave it alone.
