I didn't like the faded black shelf so last fall I decided to do something about it. Fairly easy process.
Steps
1) Remove the seat both upper and lower. Upper has a couple 10 mm on the sides and the lower pops out.
2) Remove the two rear side pillars, they pop out but be careful they are plastic and can break.
3) Remove the head rests. Pop off the plastic base pieces at the base of the headrests. Then get a screw driver and push the small tabs while you put pressure on the headrest so the headrests slide out. There are a couple videos on this. This took me about about 45 minutes and patience.
4) Remove the panel.
The removed panel
It's not difficult, I did this on a warm summer evening. I sprayed a couple light coats about 5-10 minutes apart.
Looks new.
I purchased paint from Amazon. This is made for nylon, no odor and it worked fantastic. SEM color coat 15243 Satin Black. (Thanks AMG Meister)

Looks good! Do you have the rear shade in your car? If so, was it accessible when you removed the tray? Mine is stuck in the up position. My tray is also faded. Wondering if I can kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

I don't have the rear shade so I'm not able to answer your question with certainty but I would assume that you would gain access when you remove the tray.
Damn Chris, nice work! Luckily, mine is not faded.
Looks great, especially the minimal effort involved for those results.
The shelf looks worse outside the car versus when it was in. My car is now tinted but it still gets hot in the summer if the car sits out.
I have a silver reflector shade I put up if the car is going to sit outside for any length of time. I was just going to replace the shelf but I thought I'll try and spray it. I thought what do I have to lose, I believed it was kind of hokey but it worked great.
My neighbor has a CLS that needs to be done, his is far worse.

A number on members have repaired the rear shade. Do a search and you should be able to find those threads and how they accessed it.
