Rear End Sway-Control Arms? Rear Shocks?

***Admin***, forgive me if I have started this thread in a way that is incorrect.

I have a 2006 E55 AMG. 155,000 miles. Fully stock, new Arnott air suspension components front and back, plus compressor. New front control arms and lower bushings. New wheel bearings. Alignment done after all that.

I still have a feeling of the car kind of "steering itself from the rear". The ride is unsettling at times. I am looking for advice or guidance from this amazing community for what yall think could be my next step.

Rear control arms?

Rear shock absorbers to match the new airbags?

Something else, like the subframe bushings?

LOVE this freakin rocketship, but want to feel good about the ride when I hit the road.

Thanks!

Did you recalibrate the suspension after replacing the suspension components? I've posted on how to verify calibration and it literally takes about five minutes using STAR/Xentry. If calibration is needed, you can do so in an hour or two. Figure two hours the first time you calibrate but it will go much faster the next time you perform the operation.

Have it checked out at a indie shop. We can't fix things like this over a forum.

I do get what you're saying, as my E63 feels like that as well, after changing out every suspension component front and rear.
I just called my shop to ask them that very question, whether or not they calibrated the suspension. But unfortunately, they are tied up at the moment.
But I will give them a call in the morning to ask.

Check the rear subframe bolts, they may be broken.

I've had it calibrated at my local independent shop. Unfortunately I do not have STAR of Xentry to DIY it.

Best I can tell from all of the forums I trust, is that people who know what they're talking about can point someone not as experienced in a right direction. Just looking for advice, BUT if someone has figured out how to do repairs via a forum, I'm all in.

I just bought new tires for my E63, so I'm going to have those installed, then have my suspension calibrated, then do an alignment.
This should clear up the loose feeling I get from the rear end. The last time that I was at the shop we checked rear subframe bushings and retightened the subframe bolts.

Yes, but were the fronts NEW or REMAN? There is a significant difference that may be your problem.....If you're not sure tell us the part numbers. Is the unsettling feeling at highway speeds, especially on exit ramps?

I purchased brand new Arnotts front and rear and feel confident about that. The time I feel it most is entering a curve from a straight at highway speed. It's like the weight transfer causes a slight wobble. I also feel it going straight but changing lanes. It feels good on exiting. Straight ahead hard acceleration feels good too.

I really appreciate it!

Don't get too confident. I think you have the same problem I did. I can tell you I almost 💩 my pants when it first happened to me at highway speeds. Here's the problem. The "new" Arnotts do NOT have an ADS (active damping system) valve. They have a resistor that tricks the ESP control unit to not set a fault. The valving on the front shocks is too soft, and doesn't match the rear of the car. This creates an unbalanced and floaty front end handling of the car which can be downright scary at high speed maneuvers as the front lifts and transfers weight to the rear in an oscillating repetition. Around town you'll never notice it. Arnott was kind enough to take back their new units in exchange for a pair of factory remans with the ADS valves intact. The retailers are supposed to disclose this but many don't know. Go to your car and bounce the front a few times with your hands at one of the fenders. Now go and try that at the rear fenders or trunk lid... you'll barely be able to bounce it. Note how much softer the front is. Again, don't confuse NEW Arnotts with REMAN Arnotts so be sure you are answering correctly. The NEW ones are Arnott's own design with all new parts and shocks valved to what they thought was good. It's not. In fairness to them, they are running out of serviceable cores for the E55 so this was their solution to keep these cars on the road without spending a couple thousand $$$ for OEM replacements. They don't have the ability to rebuild the ADS valve or the oem shocks, and we are talking 20 year old cars with hundreds of thousands of miles of wear when they get the cores.

Well, today I had new shoes installed along with a four wheel alignment and suspension calibration. This has cleared up my issue with feeling like the front and rear suspension aren’t working in conjunction with one another. The car is now well planted, and feels like it did before the entire suspension was replaced. I’m very satisfied with the car now.
