Motor Trend E55 V. M5 article...

shocker M5 is better, "The defining M5 moment," "Another indication that the E55 isnt the natural supercar the M5 so clearly is,"It (E55) doesnt turn in with anything like the sharpness of the M5" blah, blah, blah. The E55 is fast though.

E55 is damn fast in straight line.... It's very scary IMO... I really don't dare to push it too hard.

There's a thread already about this test. They didn't even performance test the two cars from what i've heard.......so the jurys still out. I think theyre holding out doing a proper comparison so they can get more sales.

the E55 is no match at all for the M5. If you guys have ever driven a M-car you would know what M's are all about. the new M5 has 550 HP with a 7 sp SMG II transmission. DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WUT THIS MEANS??? straight line acceraltion doesnt mean its a better car. Its the overall performance of it.

heh these are pretty funny, getting all amped up about a car that noone has tested yet. And none of these people even own it yet. I have no doubt it will be a good car, possibly a great car.

Persoanlly, I thought it was butt-ugly, lack amenities for a 90K car and didn't wnts to wait a year+ so I got an E55...

2001 BMW 740i sport, (sold) 05 E55 Flint Grey
My thoughts exactly, DRCrowder. I got tired of waiting for the M5, and finally broke a 30 year BMW habbit. My new Flint Grey E55 will be here on Wednesday. Also the new M5 sounds way overcomplicated. I just want to get in and go, and not have to figure out want power and transmission setting I want to use for a certain particular trip. Let's see...500hp or is 400 enough for this errand. And which of the 11 different transmission settings would be appropiate for the next trip to the grocery store. Come on...

Blah, we'd all be driving Mitsu Lancers then. It's got amazing handling, it's reliable, and it's fast.

Some people like different things, for those that want:
  • Speed
  • Acceleration
  • No waiting
  • A MercedesBenz
The E55 is for them.

It used to be that the M5 and the E55 were direct targets to one another, but once the W211 was launched, it seems as if BMW has targetted .. well I'm not sure. It's not the enthusiast, because otherwise it would have a manual, and it's not the average driver, because then it wouldn't have a billion functions. Who knows until the cars actually here in the metal and more real opinions are present. As reggid, the jury is still out.

The ONLY thing that would bother me would be if the M5 was faster than the E55. Apparently it isn't, so I have nothing to worry about if one should challenge me at a stoplight.

If I want to go to an autocross track, I'll take my Vette.......why take a luxury car?

Because it probably is faster than a stock vette. You seem to associate good handling with tracking the car. But you can enjoy the handling also in every day driving. I know that I make more turns than I do hard acceleration.

My guesses for straight line performance:
0-60 M5 wins
1/4 mile E55
0-125 M5

both cars will do the 1/4@115 or so mph so the lead is unlikely to change from 115 to 124mph. i think one will be definately faster @ speeds above 100mph and it'll be a flip of a coin off the line

I've heard that before. But if they are both capped at 155 mph, what difference does it make? Handling-wise, I have no doubt the M will be better, especially since BMW dropped that active-handling system.

When they finally do arrive here for real testing, and people take their M5's to the strip, we'll see how they compare. If the E55 is trapping at 115 - 117 and still pulling strong, and the M5 is lagging, then it is hard to say that the M5 will leave the E55 behind at higher speeds (140 or so).

Hopefully, there will be a real test on our shores some day. Right after they test a "production" Ford GT. Car is already out and the mags are still testing pre-production samples. Geez.

I'm so sick of this M5 comparo againest the E55. The dayam M5 doesn't isn't even out for crying out loud!~! Can't we all jus stop the arguing about this until the 2 cars come out and we can all have a thorough comparison? Yes I agree with some of you guys that the M5 WILL handle better. We that is obvious but then again it seems like you guys are always talkin about blah blah blah E55 is faster in 0-60 and quarter mile but we still go you beat in handling, and you call that the "overall package". IMO both cars are going to be very very fast, it jus depends on what you want on your car that is going to be the deciding factor for who buys what car. Just my 2 cents...

Hehe. I beat a 2002 M5 with my EVO from the stop light. 2 to 3 cars ahead at around 80 mph. I'm at 3rd gear.
