Persoanlly, I thought it was butt-ugly, lack amenities for a 90K car and didn't wnts to wait a year+ so I got an E55...

My thoughts exactly, DRCrowder. I got tired of waiting for the M5, and finally broke a 30 year BMW habbit. My new Flint Grey E55 will be here on Wednesday. Also the new M5 sounds way overcomplicated. I just want to get in and go, and not have to figure out want power and transmission setting I want to use for a certain particular trip. Let's see...500hp or is 400 enough for this errand. And which of the 11 different transmission settings would be appropiate for the next trip to the grocery store. Come on...

- No waiting

It used to be that the M5 and the E55 were direct targets to one another, but once the W211 was launched, it seems as if BMW has targetted .. well I'm not sure. It's not the enthusiast, because otherwise it would have a manual, and it's not the average driver, because then it wouldn't have a billion functions. Who knows until the cars actually here in the metal and more real opinions are present. As reggid, the jury is still out.
The ONLY thing that would bother me would be if the M5 was faster than the E55. Apparently it isn't, so I have nothing to worry about if one should challenge me at a stoplight.
If I want to go to an autocross track, I'll take my Vette.......why take a luxury car?

My guesses for straight line performance:
0-60 M5 wins
1/4 mile E55
0-125 M5
1/4 mile E55
0-125 M5

When they finally do arrive here for real testing, and people take their M5's to the strip, we'll see how they compare. If the E55 is trapping at 115 - 117 and still pulling strong, and the M5 is lagging, then it is hard to say that the M5 will leave the E55 behind at higher speeds (140 or so).
Hopefully, there will be a real test on our shores some day. Right after they test a "production" Ford GT. Car is already out and the mags are still testing pre-production samples. Geez.
Hehe. I beat a 2002 M5 with my EVO from the stop light. 2 to 3 cars ahead at around 80 mph. I'm at 3rd gear.
