Hey guys hoping you can advise me, I've recently had a transmission failure. I have a low mileage replacement but no way to code it. My thought was to swap the conductor plate over to the new transmission and reset learned values. Can indo this or should I use the original valve body also?
I would switch conductor plate only. Should be fine assuming the plate is not bad.
Trans plate should be good the tranny that failed was a reman unit. The car triggered an abs light and shortly after the transmission jolted and began to leak from the bellhousing as well as whine I'm assuming the pump grenade. Tcm triggered a code for vss vs wheel speed sensor correlation as well as the abs module for left rear speed sensor output. Car went into limp mode but by the time I got off the road the tranny was done. I'm assuming the bad speed sensor may have kept the converter locked up and caused it to overheat, could be wrong but the car was fine the day before no abs light no trans problem, got caught in some heavy rain and the next day an abs light that put the car into limp mode, shortly after that while trying to get to gas station to see what's up the tranny popped
I have a 2007 E63 that comes with the 722.9 Tranny, as you probably well know. After 2+ years of work done rebuilding the front end then the rear end (as one can view for themselves by searching my posts), I found myself stranded on the side of the road after suddenly not being able to get out of 1st Gear! Previous to this I had encountered some of the Tranny Gremlins that inevitably show themselves prior to all-out failure, so I was prepared, but you never know when it's going to occur, obviously. Such gremlins appeared in the form of, say, not being able to use the paddle shifters which meant that the auto-gear shift (which changes the gear from 3rd to 4th gear at 25mph) would work if left alone, however when you try employ the use of the Paddle Shifters, then I would find the car would stay in whatever gear it's currently in. I found that if I was able to pull over, whether it be in a parking lot or at a stop light, I could quickly restart and it would reset and I would be on my way! That is, until it didn't!
As I had suspected, it turned out STAR/Xentry pointed to the Speed Sensor(Y3/8n2) with codes (2767 & 2768) located directly on the TCU above the Valve Body itself Inside the Transmission Housing (unlike E55 or even later model E63's where they are located under the Passenger Floor). I ended up Removing the Tranny myself, just as I had done a year or so ago during my marathon 2nd build of the Rear End where I split the Valve Plates and cleaned the Valve Body (I posted this procedure in detail NOT Referenced in WIS). I sent my TCU to Circuit Board Medics (CBM) and was surprised at just how fast the turnaround was! I haven't had an issue since. This is the only way you can go without facing the reality that one must otherwise take their inoperable car to Mercedes to have them use their "MB Connected" Star Xentry to Reprogram the owners' "New/other" TCU/Transmssion.
So bottom line, if your Tranny is toast due to the gearing, one can avoid the above mentioned requirement by finding an "indy" Trans specialist to rebuild your own Tranny. While doing this, spend the $$ to have CBM "Future Proof" your TCU (assuming it's located above the Valve Body) and you thus avoid having to go to Mercedes and pay to have them do this "$ervice" for you, that is, if they will do it for you?!?!. I'm not sure what the status is on being able to purchase new Tranny's through Mercedes, but as long as it's possible, surely their recommendations would lean that way! Can you say $10k+ including install!!!
I had initially decided, there on the side of the road, to have Renntech do their Tranny Upgrade ($3k+) which they promote online. So, off the car went to RennTech. However, as pertains to the TCU, I only found out the next day that they don't do that repair so it would have cost me $2350 +4 hrs @ $175 p/hr to replace the "Body/Control Unit" (ie-Valve Body/TCU), but when they told me their MB Xentry was having "issues" and that they could NOT reprogram any replacement units at any time, I had to get my car towed back home and although I didn't get buffed out with upgraded Gearing, I did save some major $$ DIY! I think anyone would agree, It would have made no sense to pay them to the above without their being able to do the necessary programming! But in their mind, they thought they had me, that is until I told them I could get the TCU Repaired myself!! And I'm a happier man today for it!!!!
