05 instrument cluster problem

So today, for the first time, I turned the key and the instrument cluster is blank, checked all fuses that can be related to the instrument cluster and all fuses appear to be fine. Also noticed that the climate control is extremely dim, don’t know if the problem is related to the instrument cluster being out. How common is it for these instrument cluster to go bad? I would hate to buy one and that’s not the problem. Anyone have any ideas of what I can check other than the fuses which were fine. car drives fine, had a friend of mine‘s check it with his scanner, and it says no communication with instrument cluster.

[QUOTE=radride;8900350]Battery?

Battery tested fine, so I decide to give it another shot and see if it starts. Surprisingly! It starts but gauge cluster is still dead. Now I’m even more confused than I was before. What’s up with that? No start this morning?

Water intrusion? Pull the sil plate's and stick your hand under the carpet also check the overhead console, pull down the visor also and feel. Front cowel drains usually wet the front floor wells. Sunroof drains can go to the rear footwells and overhead console.

Ok I will check, there is a very good possibility that is the problem. The car has been in the shop for months and I had it detailed when I got it back and I know they used a pressure washer. The next day the problem started

After about an hour of searching no water was found in car, only traces of water that was found was in the trunk spare tire wheel well and it was very little, Just enough that you can use a towel and wipe it. So the search still continues. Cluster still is dead but the car has been starting fine

Interesting. I had the a similar issue with my 04 E55. I started it one day, and the entire cluster was blank. No lights whatsoever, needles stayed put, but the car started and ran with no problem. I didn’t notice if the climate lights changed though. All I did was detach the negative battery cable and reattach it, and it worked just fine again and hasn’t happened since. My trunk has leaked terribly for a while now, but this happened early fall when we hadn’t had rain since last winter so that shouldn’t have been the reason for my problem. Not sure what your issue might be, but hope you find it.

**Update**

thanks to everyone that tried to help , the problem turned out to be the gauge cluster. I got a used one on Facebook marketplace and plugged it in yesterday and everything worked fine, it was also remedy the dimming climate control cluster, and my steering wheel controls are back. I took it back out to give to my tuner so he can clone the mileage. So just in case someone comes across this thread they would see that the problem turned out to be a dead cluster. No signs of it going bad just turned the key one warning, and it was completely dead. Thanks again for all the help and everyone’s input.
