Airmatic failure 1 week after buying

I know there’s plenty of posts about this and it being a common problem but just looking for some reassurance as like I say only owned my E55 for a week.

Got in my car today to see a “stop car too low” on the cluster, got out and saw my car was fully dropped in all 4 corners (the back is lower than the front). It was fine when driving last night. Press the raise button and nothing happens.

based on this I’m guessing the compressor has stopped working, how loud should it sound with my ear next to wheel arch and should this kick in as soon as I start the car ? If I figure out it is the compressor is a straight replacement the best option ?

What other possibilities could this be as I’m guessing not a leak due to fact it’s been sat fine for the past week with the same amount of time in-between drives.

cheers.

A number of things, but compressor is a high probability. You can definitely hear the compressor once its working. Not super super loud, but definitely something to be heard. Can also be a worn/broken compressor relay, although that usually is the fault of an old compressor. Other things to consider can be the valve block.

Do you have something like star/autel/icarsoft? You can test the compressor from each of those devices. For basic understanding, see this informative post from FCP euro: https://blog.fcpeuro.com/the-definit...pension-system

Does the engine need to be running for compressor to kick in or should it start when I turn just the car on ? Being an E55 anything within a 5 meter radius is droned out by the engine 🤣

I’ve looked through other forum posts and there’s like 1000 different suggestions due to slightly different issues. Mine being all 4 sides dropped and not raising at all- could it be a leak on an individual strut meaning compressor is working fine but not building enough pressure to raise ?

I don’t have any of those diagnostic tools, only a standard OBD fault reader. I’m going to take a look at the compressor, fuses and relay this afternoon but other than the obvious checks for leaks/powering on correct/ visible damage etc, I wouldn’t know what else to check if those seem fine.

thanks.

Update- the compressor definitely isn’t working, when inspecting I found this hose (link 1) to be damaged and have repaired it but hasn’t made a difference. I’ve tried testing what I believe is the compressor supply (link 2) and I’m not getting any voltage, anyone know where to trace this to next ? I’ve checked the relay 32 in the engine bay and resistance is fine. Still yet to check the fuse under passenger footwell. Any suggestions if that comes back fine also ?

Link 1, that is the hose that goes to the small airfilter (intake side of the compressor) and will not solve the issue

I printed out a copy for me to keep in my car. You will find the airmatic fuse

Yeah didn’t expect it to solve issue, however I thought some dirt/grit could have potentially been sucked into it and made its way into the compressor. I’ve taken the filter off and looks okay but can’t split it to see inside.

Just make sure the hose is repaired. Mine was also broken, I also made pictures of the little airfilter, which is a fuel filter btw
