On startup I have a particularly loud whine. I have noticed that ALL the MB cars do this. It can't be the SC - it's disengaged at startup. Any ideas?

The ABS pump I know - this is immediate on start up. Hydraulic pump of some sort?

its the air pump that comes on at cold start. my car sounds like a hoover when i turn it on. I think it has to be the worst sounding car on the street when it fires up. The pump changes tone and pitch no fewer than 5 times and each time I swear it is just going to stop working.

I know it will fail soon so I will have it replaced next time it goes in for service. My SL55 dos not sound nearly as bad so I think somethng must be wrong with my E55.

Not a big deal just something that sounds like junk.

Is it a "chain saw" type of noise!? I've never heard of that kind of noise until tonight (mine is a 03') It lasted for about 10, 15sec at starup in the garage, and came back 5mins later at a postal office near my house. a bad air pump? abs pump?? anyone?

If it's normal, how come my CLK430, W210 E, and SL500 doesn't make that nosie??? and heard that noise for the first time after I bought my E55 a year later?

I think its all the electronic gizmos, ABS, SBC and stuff turning on and doing a self test. But, I wouldnt worry nothing is wrong with the car.

Not all Mercedes do it. My W210 doesnt do it, neither does our S600.

Yeah our C55 does it too. I've heard all the V8's do it so I'm not concerned.
